According to FiveOuncesofPain, the UFC announcement for next Tuesday was going to be the passing of legislation to allow MMA in the state of New York. The only problem is today the New York Committee for Tourism, Arts, and Sports Development voted down the bill.

This web site has also learned that the possible legalization of Mixed Martial Arts in the state of New York was the planned announcement that UFC president Dana White had hinted at during an interview that was published on ESPN.com last week.

According to a source, White was confident that the vote was going to pass and believed he had assurances that the proposed bill would be approved by the committee for Tourism, Arts, and Sports Development of New York. However, the proposal was unexpectedly voted down for reasons that are not yet clear. In a strange turn of events, it is believed that the chair of the committee, Assemblyman Steve Englebright, who introduced the proposal, ended up voting against it.

Why the bill got shot down and how it is still not dead.

The bill was not passed in large part because of opposition from both sides. However, according to our source, a republican committee member “picked up the bill” and applied pressure after the session to have the vote passed. In another unusual development, several committee members, primarily republican but also a few democrat, attempted to change their vote.

Because of the attempt to change votes, it was decided that the bill will be placed on the agenda again early next week. Such a decision to put a bill back on the agenda so quickly after it had been voted down was described as “highly irregular.”

  1. getting into new york is great but not the news i was hoping for.

  2. yeah, getting MMA in NY is not an "exclusive" announcement for the UFC. that would also allow strikeforce and elitexc to have events there as well. dana better be announcing the signing of fedor or something.

  3. Hopefully that wasn't their only announcement. My guess is that Dana will talk about Nogueira vs Mir as coaches for the next Ultimate Fighter.

  4. There are so many rumors right now. All I know is that the UFC is putting a lot of emphasis on this announcement so they have a lot to live up to now in the minds of MMA fans.

  5. Hurry up Dana. Too much hype it better be good.

  6. honestly, i don't know what could equal all the hype. he already denied most of the rumors on CNBC. NY denied the bill and plus, that couldn't be the rumor because Dana said it would only benefit the UFC. everyone already knows he is bringing the UFC to atlanta. so what could possibly be this new announcement? signing of fedor to an exclusive contract? making fedor-randy happen? partnering up with DREAM? merging WEC and UFC into one? stepping down as president?

  7. i think the announcement is going to be either network tv or a partnership. it cant be a sponsor because you really cant outdo budweiser.

  8. Its not Fedor, Dana won't let him do Sambo while under contract.

    Its not TUF 8 Coaches

    Its not a fight

Dana was making this announcement to his employees and he was excited. If you have ever had a genius boss, you know how this works. He didn't mean to spill the beans that he was going to make an announcement. In fact he regrets it at this point.

Its tomorrow at 12 his meeting with his team. Lets weight and see.

  9. Sorry this has nothing to do with the legislation, but when in the hell are we gonna see cage fighting in the olympics? I think combact fighting has more right to be in the olympics than Bmx. I dont recall studying about some one on a bike back in greek times.

  10. Hopefully iits more ACTION FIGURES… guys I think we all know this is going to be something most of us won't even give two squirts of monkey piss about.
