UFC heavyweight fighter Justin Eilers (19-7-1) was shot and killed on Christmas Night in Nampa, Idaho.

“We initially received the call as being a domestic disturbance at the residence … While deputies were en route to the residence, they were updated that a shot had been fired and a person had been shot at the scene.” [fiveOnces]

“When deputies arrived on scene they took James Robert Malec into custody,” Canyon County Police Capt. Dana Maxfield stated. “He is 48-years old and has been charged with second degree murder.”

Details surrounding the incident have not yet been revealed by police, but sources close to Eilers indicate that Malec is the boyfriend of Eilers’ mother. He and Eilers reportedly got into some sort of argument and Malec allegedly produced a gun and shot Eilers.[MMAWeekly]

The former Iowa State University football linebacker competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championships from 2004-2006.

In 2008 Eilers was picked up by EliteXC to fight the heavyweight champion Antonio “Big Foot” Silva at EliteXC “Unfinished Business”. He ended up losing that fight by TKO early in the second round. That was Eilers last MMA fight.

Eilers was 30 years old…

As sad as this is, things like this are starting to become a pattern. I hope and pray this sport doesnt turn into the nba and nfl but it seems to me there are alot more reasons for people to look down on mma in the last few weeks than to embrace it. If your out there and your a fighter make good decisions, PLEASE!

I’m not sure that is what Steveo is saying. I also hope this doesn’t look bad for the sport. Either way, it is a tragedy and it makes it even worse to know it happened on Christmas night.

Its got nothing to do with his job. The man was killed and thats F**cked up.
If a chef got shot would it make all chefs in the world look bad? No!
My heart goes out to his family and friends who lost someone on christmas day of all days.
Not one person should look down on MMA for what goes on outside the ring. If he was killed in a fight then maybe the sport would come in to play, but as it stands just let people mourn for Justin Eilers.

I agree Luke, but just because MMA is fighting, people just assume that is why they were killed, because they think fighters live a violent lifestyle. Some people just look down on fighters for everything they do because they make assumptions about their lifestyles, thats all I was saying.

It was MURDER! Justin is not here to say what had happened on Christmas night. James Malec (the boyfriend) made sure of that, Malec was a Canyon County policeman for two years before he got fired, so he new where he was aiming.
