UFC News: Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Coleman

mark coleman vs lesnar

Tonight during the UFC 82 PPV show, the Ultimate Fighting Championships inducted Mark “The Hammer” Coleman into the UFC hall of fame.

While we were expecting a “walk into the sunset” type speech from the hall of famer, instead Coleman surprisingly announced that he will be taking on former WWE superstar Brock Lesnar at UFC 87 August in Minneapolis, Minnesota .

The 44 year old fighter has fought everyone from Fedor Emelianenko, Mirko Cro Cop, UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Don Frye, Gary Goodridge and Pedro Rizzo, first appearing back at UFC 10.

Heres a clip from his speech tonight:

“The fans want to see me, I’m gonna pay my dues, and I’m gonna do the best I can. He (Lesnar) is a beast, he’s an animal, but don’t bet the house against me. I’m gonna bring something for Brock Lesnar and I’m gonna beat his butt.”

Comments

  1. Dont like the match up, give Lesnar someone who isnt old…This is gonna be a boring wrestling match

  2. This is pathetic, Dana White is a moron for putting an old completely "over the hill" Mark Coleman in there against Brock Lesnar who has zero grappling skills. He is trying all he can to put a big name in there so he can get as much as possible out of his Brock Lesnar investment. The last I saw of Coleman was a what 40-50 second loss/beating administered by Fedor, he should stay retired. Dana PAY the fighters what they are worth and stop spending money on these freak shows. Couture, Ortiz and Arlovski are just a few of the quality names that are leaving the UFC so the can get paid what they are worth. The reality is Dana White's arrogance is what got the UFC back on its feet and its what is going to bring it back crashing to the ground. I hope Mark Cuban gets his HDNet to be the #1 MMA entity and finally takes care of the fighters as it should be and helps make sure the best fighters are fighting each other not like boxing and what seems to be happening to MMA with all these random MMA bodies being created daily. Dana stop being a pissed off child and treat the best fighters in the world like they should be treated and listen to their requests or they WILL leave in droves. Arlovski on the non-televised undercard with Herring being the second to last fight was a travesty. GROW UP DANA!!!

  3. I THINK THIS FIGHT WILL BE K BUT YEAH ITS JUST GOING TO BE LIKE A WRESTLING MATCH

  4. Scooby Doo says:

Hey Joe u have a very danmm good point i thought The hammer should go into the sunset,But like u stated the UFC is starting to become a freak show. i wanted to wacth Diego's fight and Kos's fight to see if Dana was smart enough to build up a 2nd fight! No luck on that one. I wanted to wacth AA's(the Pit Bull) fight to see if we would get his shot at the Title!NO! I got to see check and Herring weak ass fight'" stated by Herring himself."Come on M.Cuban let's get it on! Get it started i'm ready for the ufc' comp to come up! It seems u will have very good fighters ( if dana's putin on old guy vs new kid, and not paying what the fighters should be gettin paid. TRAVESTY INDEED JOE!

  5. dane drebin says:

who knows? coleman was an olympian his wrestling might nulify brocks and we might see a standup match. i personally think brock would win in a standup ight with him having the longest reach in the ufc and the biggest hands and how he dropped mir with one punch. kurt angle was rumored to beat brock in wrestling matches and didnt coleman beat anlge? but coleman is really old now so who knows what coleman will show up. personally i think brock is too big for coleman. i hink this fight is actually harder than the fight i thought brock would get because he is fighting another former champion who is a big strong wrestler like him and i really thoguht the ufc would feed him a striker but thats not the case so actually in a way i think brock will get more respect if he beats coleman than if he beat eddie sanchez or someone like that.

  6. Lesnar poses the same problem as all of Colemans last losses (like Fedor and Crocop). He is big and strong and likes to throw leather. I see this as being a bad matchup too just because it seems like Coleman is too old now and Brock might just impose his will on the guy the whole fight.

  7. Morey we don't know if likes to throw yet, in the fight with Mir he took it to the ground instantly. But i believe if Lesnar evn has less than mediocre quickness/accuracy that he will STRAIGHT UP KNOCK YOU THE FUCK OUT!!!! But yeah i didn't like this match up, I would have liked to see Lesnar Vs. Gonzaga!! and if not that then at least Brock/ Vera

  8. awesome love to see mark the hammer come back … love mark.. been in many a battles seen him kick ass …..seen him get his ass kicked.. all i can say is go mark ( the hammer) coleman… he always looks in great shape… i always have put him in the same category as a better fighter than …. any shamrock….go mark go

  9. WHAT ABOUT LESNAR ….. TIM SILVA

  10. brock has one fight they need to throw him easyer people like cole but coleman isnt a push over but i think they are the same kind of fighters and but brock is stronger and younger

  11. i mean 2 sorry

  12. I don't really like this match up Brock should walk through Coleman he's to old. But I think after the Mir fight the UFC decided to do the same thing EliteXC is doing with Kimbo give him some washed up old Vets to gain some experience and not to mention a favorable record and then they will give him some real competition. throwing him in the cage with Silva or Gonzaga would be a terrible idea this early in his career.

  13. You guys are funny. You say Coleman's to old … you probably said that about Couture (remember him) and then someone siad Lesnar has zero wrestling skills … guess he has never heard of the NCAA wrestling.

  14. yes do what ELITExC IS doing with KImbo cause Brock hasnt has fight match and he needs to get more experison..

  15. this is kind of weak coleman is old and has not looked good in a long time so even if lesnar beats him it won't say much to most fans and if he loses it just looks worse for him.i still would not be surprized if coleman beat him though he does have the experience of fighting the best where lesnar still has alot to prove.

  16. You know, it's funny that several of you make comments about how old Coleman is. Age has shit to do with anything other than retirement! Couture is long in the tooth and there aren't many of us that could whip his ass….he's proven that! The last guy, 23, that kept reminding me of my age, which is 37 by the way, lasted exactly 27 seconds…..so your age argument is BS. Especially when it comes to a life long wrestler, whose conditioning is generally one of the best of sport compared to boxers, ju-jitsu, etc. Just my .02

  17. dane drebin says:

    coleman is no couture

  18. Scooby Doo says:

Mike, coleman should just go down with the sunset like a Warrior does when his time past, he needs to go into the ifl and coach a team that way his fighting style can go on. another bad example look what happed with HUGHES vs GRACIE another hall of famer. Just don't do it! Let it go. but u got to give to some of these old warriors they just don't give up that easy, just like some boxers, example holyfield. Don frye/ Ken Shamrock r still at it.Let it go old Warriors. IT is time to be wise not stupid!!!!

  19. Mike I hate people who use coturre as an example for defying age, age has everything to do with it and couture is about the only exception, using him is completely unfair and a complete cop out. A wrestler has good endurance, not the best. Ur completely wrong I hope u get ur testicles cut off

  20. Lesnar is to big, fast and to hungary to not win. He will walk all over him. Look at the last fight, he was whipping Mir's butt until he make a rookie mistake. If not for that stoppage Mir would be in the hospital oh wait didnt he go on medical leave cause he suffered deep bruises and lacerations to the face and a concussion. Lesnar is the real deal and needs some tune up matches and just get his feet wet. He will eventually dominate the UFC heavywieght division. Lesnar all the way.

  21. i think lesnar is like matt hughes when it comes to competition. he does not take losing well at all. he is going to train his ass off and improve even faster now. theres no use even talking about this fight because i think coleman will be outmatched in this one. especially since he will be going on a year and a half since competing and who knows how long he took off from training.

  22. I agree and not to mention the August fight is also in His home town of where he trains and resides. I used to wrestle in HS and went to J Robinson camp in Minnesota and Lesnar was there training for his 2000 NCAA championship season, he is a nice guy but i would not like to wrestle him let alone fight him, he is huge and his hands are like the size of my head come on he weres a XXX UFC glove. Damn and his intensity is insane. Just think of what he did back in college when he was runner up in 99, he came back even stronger and dominated in 2000. If Lesnar can stay focused through training and excel in his MMA skills look for this to be a first round KO in under 60 seconds. Im telling you all be aware, Lesnar is the next big thing in MMA and just because he lost his last fight doesnt mean he got beat, he lost due to submission and there is no shame in that. there is however shame in getting your butt kicked and having your face look like someone just ran over it with a mack truck. Lesnar by far is the next big thing in MMA period he just needs some time to devolope his skills and obtain new one. all in due time.

  23. Tim that is extremely well said and i agree 100%. I am on the Lesnar bandwagon after seeing his impressive showing against Mir. His ground game looked great as he was able to sucessfully take Mir down multiple times and spin out of his guard multiple times. Lesnar looked like the real deal and as long as he keeps developing his all around MMA game and not just his ground game he should be a dominant force in the HW division. I beleive that his next opponent should be a striker but an almost certain win for Lesnar so he can build up his experience, but I respect the shit out of Lesnar for him taking on any opponent at any time big ups for Brock!!!

  24. i am not trying to hate on lesnar he did show some good things in his fight with mir,but the fact is he did not last longer than 90 seconds with a mid level fighter like mir,he has not proven he can take a punch(he can diffinetly give one)he might get knocked out once and never want to fight again so i would not call him the next big thing just yet.maybe?

  25. as for the coleman fight i think lesnar should destroy him and i am sure thats danas plan, but from what i heard angle and lesnar wrestled kurt at 205 and lesnar was 295 and kurt beat him twice and lesnar could not score one point on him.also coleman beat angle one out of 2 matches and lesnar did not make it to the olypmics where they did and that coleman used to destroy kerr when he was at his best.they are similar fighters lesnar is younger and stronger and that should do it but coleman has fought the best in the world and has proved he can fight in mma lesnar has not yet.

  26. No offense Roy but where did you get your info from. Lesnar was trainging for the olypmics when WWE offered him a 7 figure salary, now im sorry but no idiot in there mind would turn down that kind of money at that young of an age. Kurt on the other hand had to prove himself and only after he won a gold medal did the WWE see a gimmack and a money maker in Angle. Im taking nothing away from Angle but he is no match for lesnar, the story you heard is far from what i have researched and have heard. from what i have heard it was Angle that had a hard time with Lesnar and it was pretty much even with Angle having a slight edge. Lesnar pinned Angle and vice versa. The fact is is that lesnar all around has the IT Factor per say to be the next big thing, its now up to him to use and develope his current skills. He took Mir down with one punch, and Mir is no slouch he may not be the best stand up fighter but he is credible and lesnar took him for a ride and beat him bad, he may have lost the match but look at the outcome Mir was bloodied and beaten and suffereed deep bruises to the cranium and lacerations as well and was out on medical leave from the UFC because of the hands of lesnar. Now true lesnar has not been punched but as much as i know you all dont want to believe he did occasionally take a beating when he wrestled in college and the WWE and New Japan, just let you all know New Japan is not fake or scripted its full go, fists a flying with some rules of course. Point being that im sure he can take a punch but truly lets see who can hit who first, he has a massive reach advantage over practicly everyone in the UFC even Sylvia he is dominant and intimidating extremely strong and very very fast and explosive for a big guy who weighs in at 265. Truth being that if Lesnar focus on his training and advancing his MMA skills to new heights he will be the NEXT BIG THING in MMA. just wait. i just wish we could see a Lesnar verse Liddel match, now that would be interesting to watch, just imagine that.

  27. Thanks for the comments Brandon, much appreciated.

  28. well thats what i heard, and i am not sold on lesnar,if he does learn fast i can see him doing great things no dout but i don't think he is there yet and this fight won't prove much.coleman is old and not that good anymore lesnar should win easy if he does lose it will look real bad for him and i still think he will lose to any top striker or bjj fighter and regaurdless of what damage mir took he won in 90 seconds and thats a fact.

  29. I agree partially, he does have some skills to develope but when you look at the big picture Lesnar can not be matched physically, the real question is… if Mentally he develops a knockout style and continues to develop his natural ones and gains new ones. If he does and just like Dana predicted within the next year Lesnar will be fighting for the HW title. If Lesnar commits himself to training as he did when he won the HW NCAA title then the rest of the fighters better watch out. Strikers are no match for Lesnar he is just overall to physical.

  30. i think he will train hard for sure but i don't know if thats enough in a short time to overcome people who are masters already.your right physically alone he is hard to overcome and will beat fighters based on that alone but not the best and i still don't think he will beat a top striker look at sap he beat some tough guys just because of his size but in the end was out classed lesnar is much better than sap but just a comparison on the size and strength factor.

  31. Now thats an insult to Lesnar, how can you compare a washed up football player to a NCAA HW wrestling Champion, Really think about it, the agility, speed and strenth involved both mentally and physically far outmatches any sport even MMA and transitions the best into MMA, look at Couture, koshceck, etc.. wrestlers who have acceeded in MMA based upon their wrestling skills, now combine that with speed, strength, endurance and size and you have one bad ass fighter, as Dana and every sport analyst out there has said, Lensar is the real deal and he is already in the striking class of Liddel, Couture, Nogueria etc.. he dropped Mir with one punch, just look at the guy alone he is massive and just isnt a guy who looks big and cant fight, he has all the assets to develope into a world class fighter, hell i would put money on this put him in the ring against Fedor and i bet you he will give him all he can handle at this time. Give him another year and a few more fights and he will be the best HW in the world if he choosed to be Lesnar has all the tools and its up to him to utilize and capitalize on them.

  32. i said lesnar is better i was just comparing size and strength and the point that there not everything lesnar is a great wrestler and may do great things in mma but i don't think he is ready yet.you said his striking is in league with liddel(no way) and couture and nog are not even know as strikers.he dropped mir with a punch but mir realy is not that good.he has power in his punches no dout but is no where near a great striker.fedor would kill him so i would not bet on that fight with you cause it would not be fair to you but if you would like to bet on another fight i would be happy to,maybe not the coleman fight but if you look around at other sites there are some quotes from fighters saying coleman is going to win.the good thing is we will see what happens with him if he goes in there with a striker and gets knocked out or over powers them with his wrestling(i don't see him out striking any top striker at this point).

  33. I don't think Lesnar is ready to fight the top guys right now but if he keeps training hard I think he will be able to soon. Not many HW's have a stellar ground game anyway. Coleman is a good fight for him to take right now.

As far as Mir not being that good, I don't agree he is at the top but he is good. Imagine you are getting pounded by a giant and have the awareness to hook the leg and end the fight. On top of that I wouldnt call any former champ not that good. If you want to say that he has looked bad in some fights they I would agree with you there.

  34. Well i said thats what Dana White and alot of Sport Anaylyst have said in regards to him being in the same striking class of Liddel etc. The guy has the total package and to say he would be manhandled in a fight with Fedor is far from the truth, Fedor has no ground game when it comes to wreslting and i didnt say Lesnar would win i said the bet would be that he would give Fedor all that he could handle and then some. We just need to wait and see what transpires the bottom line is if the match with Mir wasnt stopped, Lesnar would of won via TKO or sumbission via strikes. Lesnar still has alot to learn but to say he cant just jump in and fight the best of the best is far from i fully believe he can give anyone all one could handle in a fight. The main thing is the focus and dedication of Lesnar to his training and learning. Put it this way his next fight is in August in Minnesota his home residence, now you think he is going to walk in and not be prepared to KO someone. come on now just look at the guy, Coleman in his prime was bad ass but he is not couture and truth be i think Lesnar would walk all over Couture as i dont believe there is a HW who can match up to him physically, skill wise yes but overall no and remember the only reason Lesnar lost his last fight was only due to submission and i agree he should stay away from those type of fighters until he gains some experience but striking wise i would put my money on Lesnar all the way the man is just to powerfull and explosive, we will have to wait and see.

  35. i respect what your saying tim but he could not stand and strike with any good striker,he has power and could ground and pound someone but does not have the skills to stand with a top striker.and as far as dana saying he is in league with liddels striking look at the source.

  36. heres a funny article from shonie carter he talks lesnar anderson dana and some other crazy stuff

    http://www.fighthype.com/pages/content2124.html

  37. roy how would we know that yet? Obviously he doesn't look like he has the fastest hands out there, but he could be a very capable striker with straight, powerful punches and we wouldn't even know it because we haven't seen im utilize it. We have to see him fight at least 5 more fights, not aginst scrubs and old guys like Coleman

  38. Shonie is a washed up wannabe, there are alot of fighters out there who talk the talk but can not back it up and walk the walk, Lesnar proved in his debut that he can fight and bottom line is there is no one out there in the MMA world today that can match up to him physically, the guy used pick up 500 pound athletes like it was a piece of bark, he wrestled with the best of the best in Minnesota a Divisional 1 A school and kicked butt a 106-5 record come on now you dont get those figures by just being a big guy, it takes skill and athleticism. Lesnar would kill Shonie Carter and say it all you want but Lesnar can strike with the best he has Heavy and very quick hands and its extremely strong and gifted, believe me i will take a wrestler over just a striker any day. Coleman is washed up and Lesnar is in better shape, given coleman has 5months to train but he hasnt won a fight in over 2 years and he fought joe smoes. outcome Lesnar wins TKO via strikes/submission via strikes or rear naked choke. Just imagine Lesnar with submission skills, Damn that would be like a nightmare waiting to happen, FYI Mir is 255 and one punch from Lesnar knocked him on his ass and he was dazed and confused, props to Mir though for hanging in and even Mir said himself if i hadnt of kept moving around i would of lost the fight.

  39. its cool when he faces someone with thats got striking skills i will take the bet with you.one he won't stand with them and two if he does it will be a lose for him.

  40. Im not talking standing, Lesnar is a wrestler and he will look to strike and and take it to the ground, thats where he will beat you and i fully believe that he can take anyone down the guy is just too physical and extremely explosive, Mir said it best "i never had a chance to react to his takedowns he was much faster than i expected" The guy will not stand up and fight for long he wil always look to go for his strength which is wrestling and ground and pound you there but it wouldnt shock me if he does KO someone standing the guy has awesome power.

  41. Tim, i agree…they should give Lesnar some time to acclimate to the UFC then let him fight Gonzaga, and then after that Tim Sylvia. Those are two fights i would LOVE to see

  42. Well said Brandon, i fully agree but i would say put Sylvia first then Gonzaga as he has some BJJ skills and that might be tough for lesnar to deal with but as Lesnar said he only wants to fight the best so that way i can learn from the best and beat them in the meantime or something like that.

  43. Good point Tim, i didnt think of that…I gotta say im really starting to like Lesnar. Hes got a great attitude twoards his training and the sport, he doesnt back down from anyone and hes learning the sport well. He truly is the next big thing

  44. Enough Said….

  45. Here is an article/interview with Lesnar's sparring partner. very interesting.

Thompson On Training With Brock Lesnar:

When he first came in, one of his sparring partners didn't show up so I agreed to fill in. And I'm weighing 200 (pounds) at this point, so I'm fairly big. Not his size by any means, but he hadn't been boxing at all and I've gone with plenty of heavyweights before and know that they're slow. Even good heavyweights that can move fast and can stick and move. So I said, "I'll fill-in for ya." So I went to jab, which is my best punch by far, and he went to jab and his was quicker than mine. So I'm like, "Okay, I'm in some trouble here." Well, I get inside and use head movement and kind of dirty box with him.

So I get inside and he throws a hook — and I fully covered the hook, and it still sent me half-way across the ring. So now I'm really like, "Aw, I don't know what to do. So I guess I'll set up a shot." So I throw a one-two and I shoot in and get nice and deep on his leg, and that bastard kneed me on the back of the head! Which, you know, the guy is 60 pounds heavier than me and kneeing me in the back of the head at practice. So I get up and I'm pissed. I'm yelling "What are you doing? I'm filling in trying to help you get ready and help you train, and you knee me in the back of the head?" So I'm going on and on and my coach calls me over and goes, "Uh Nick, you shot in and he just kind of back-handed you on the side of the head. It wasn't a knee and it wasn't even that hard." So I'm like, "Well, that will be the end of me sparring with Brock Lesnar." (laughs)

Thompson On Brock Lesnar's Chances Against Frank Mir:

I don't like the matchup for a wrestler's second matchup. Mir is a former world champion and he's got good jiu-jitsu. And traditionally that's not someone you want a wrestler going against. That being said, I've never seen someone as athletic, a big man as athletic — frankly, anyone as athletic as Brock, much less a heavyweight.

And I think the thing that has really impressed me about Lesnar is normally when someone with his credentials comes into a gym, they usually want to do things their way and they don't really listen. He's been the complete opposite. He came in and said, "I want to learn. I'm a blank slate, teach me." And think if you combine his athleticism with his wrestling background and with that attitude and I really think he's going to go far in this sport.

  46. dane drebin says:

brock will evolve into a far supperior mma fighter than coleman and may allready be. coleman might be an olympian… a very old olympian, but they arent going to be in a wreslting match. it's mma people! i think brock will outstrike coleman. i actually hope coleman takes brock down so that brock starts to try to sprawl and brawl and shows the world that he is a good striker aswell. i hope this fight atleast lasts 2 rounds. 1.) so we can see brock in the cage for more than a minute. 2.) i want to see coleman look ok so he can coem abck and beat some people cuz i respect the hell out of the guy i just think brocks a bad matchup for him

  47. Well Said, the future of MMA Brock Lesnar.

  48. this is a good match up because it gives lesnar a chance to pick up a big win.it will also be a good matchup because a hall of famer vs the new guy.go lesnar

  49. For the people arguing that Brock Lesnar might not be able to take a hit to the head – remember that time he messed up the shooting star press and LANDED on his head? He suffered a concussion, but got up anyways, still lifted his opponent up, and threw him. I'm pretty fucking sure 99% of the other current UFC fighters wouldn't have gotten up like he did after that.

  50. Well Said, i almost forgot about that, he is one tough beast. Lesnar is the next big thing in MMA and the future of the HW division
