UFC 98 “Mir vs Lesnar 2″ Official

The Ultimate Fighting Championships has officially announced UFC 98 “Mir vs. Lesnar II” set for May 23 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

UFC President Dana White:

Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir put on one of the most intense one round fights I’ve ever seen at UFC 81 … But when it was over, both guys saw things very differently. Lesnar blamed his loss on inexperience and being too aggressive, while Mir saw his win as a triumph of his technique, something he says will happen every time they fight. On May 23rd, each fighter has his chance to prove his point, and while a lot has happened for these two since that first fight, I know the rematch is going to be just as intense as the first one, especially considering that the winner walks away as the UFC Heavyweight Champion.”

Tickets for the pay-per-view event go on sale this Thursday to UFC Fight Club members.

  • UFC Fight Club – Thursday, March 5 at 1 PM EST.
  • UFC Newsletter – Friday, March 6 at 1 PM EST.
  • Tickets to the General Public – Saturday, March 7 at 1 PM EST.

Comments

  1. this will be nothing like the First fight..i think it will be on the feet the hole time well most of the time..i am hoping for brock to win

  2. Hoping…Brock will win, Mir cant stand with him and if lesnar stays away from the subs meaning if he feels its getting to close than he backs off and stands back up. Lesnar will come in with a killer game plan that credits his abilities as a fighter and Mir cant respond to it the only way is by subnmissiong which could happen but based upon the first fight i dont think we will see lesnar making that same mistake again so otherwise Mir is defensless and can not win, but anything can happen but lesnar has this one hands down if he comes in mentally and physically prepared and does not get to over aggressive.

  3. Mir wins again and the Brock Lesnar experiment takes another hard hit. The UFC needs more heavyweights.

  4. Oswald Gobblecock says:

Lesnar's takin him this time. He won't make the same mistake.

  5. dane drebin says:

the only thing that scares me is brock has stated on the ufc website is that he's gunna end this fight on the ground where he should have ended it last time. i hope hes just saying that because i think sprawl and brawl would be the smartest gameplan he could have. mir is just way dangerous on the ground.

  6. Lesnar will end this fight on the ground via G&P. I honestly dont think he needs to be to concerned with Mirs subs in the guard remember he broke out of 2 arm bar attempts like they were nothing, he needs to not stand back up nad remain to close to Mir, he needs to strike take down and G&P and if he feels its getting to close break away and stand the fight back up…No doubt brock wins this fight standing…he has every advangtage in his favor minus the subs but he is now a purple belt in BJJ not saying he is better than Mir i am just saying overall compared to the first time they fought he has gained some new skills and gained more composure.

  7. he needs to be concerned with mirs subs, i think dane is right no need to give mir any chances keep it standing and he will win, yes he could probally win on the ground as well but why give mir any oppertunities.

  8. From UFC.Com-Brock Lesnar has been calling for a rematch with me ever since I beat him the first time,” said Mir. “All I can say to Brock is be careful what you wish for because I’m a better, smarter,

stronger, and faster fighter than I was the last time. He won’t be able to push me around like he’s done smaller opponents, and I’m looking forward to becoming undisputed champion again.”

Are you kidding me…Mir is bigger, stronger and faster than he was, that was like a year ago and we saw him fight Nog and while he looked impressive he wasnt any bigger or stronger or faster he just put together the same combination over and over again, he is a one dimenstional fighter truly he is and while i respect him for trying to stand and learn boxing, he can not stand with Lesnar for long before he goes down, he rocked Mir the first time and nothing has changed except Lesnar has grown into his abilities a bit more and has learned new ones since the first fight. Lesnar will demolish Mir, nothing will change Lesnar comes out rocks Mir and gets the win via G&P but this time no ref stoppage and lesnar will not make the smae mistake twice. I do not see a good path to victory for Mir and although last time wasnt either things have changed in respect to brocks abilities and overall aggressivness in his fights he seems to be learning when to turn up the heat and when to play it calm and that makes for a very dangerous fighter. Best of luck to Mir he will need every ounce of luck this time around to beat Lesnar.

  9. I see your point Roy nad dane, standing he has him beat but i think Lesnar is out to prove something as well which could end up being a mistake but honestly he had Mir finished on the ground until he stood up and remained too close that was the mistake Mir sweaped him and caught him in a knee bar, other than that i dont see Lesnar making that mistake again and i dont see Mir getting a sub on Lesnars upper body so i just dont really see an good oppurtunity for Mir to win this fight.

  10. Oh and another thing, Brock manhandled Mir last time and pushed him around…the same thing will happen this time as well.

  11. dane drebin says:

dont get me wrong tim i am betting on brock winning for sure but mir is always dangerous with his subs and they come out of nowhere. i think brock should try to punish mir standing a lot before shooting for a takedown is all.

  12. I hear you Dane, and i agree, cant wait to see Lesnar finish Mir this time around and not just beat him up.

  13. i think we'll see a different MIR this time .. i think he'll go straight for the takedown .. and try and work him over on the ground ..he took some sledge hammers to the skull last time tho before he got the sub

  14. I'd love to say Mir will win, but everytime I have said that about a Lesnar fight, I was wrong. I think the subs are the ONLY thing he has on Lesnar, and if Lesnar is working up the ranks in BJJ, yeah he's not better than Mir, but he has a better understanding of the subs and their defenses. Mir may be a little bigger, faster and stronger than he was, but he is not bigger, faster or stronger than Brock. Mir's best plan will try to incorporate a combination followed by a take down and hope for a submission. That's all he's got and I don't think I'm too optimistic about it.

  15. yup i agree ryan…. at least Coulture looked like he was doing something to him before he got dropped

  16. Good call whodini, Couture had him pinned against the cage, but I remember wondering if he was pinned there because he didn't want to get caught in anything or if he truely couldn't get out.

  17. i think he was trying to wear him out some with the greco roman wrestling thing trying to take him deep into the rounds tire him out then take him out

  18. monte hoogerhyde says:

how in the hell does mir think he's bigger, faster,or stronger than brock? i think brock scares the hell out of him. and nog had pnuemonia when he fought mir

  19. First of all, the first fight was ridiculous, the fight should not have been stood up. A warning should have been issued like in normal fights, had that been done, Brock would have pounded Mir into the ground. As it is, the stood the fight up, conveniently saving themselves an additional 200 K, they broke the momentum of the fight and Brock made a rookie mistake giving Mir the opportunity of a lifetime.

In Mir's fight with NOG he looked slow to me. NOG looked like he forgot to mentally show up and Mir schooled him with simple boxing skills which was VERY strange. I'd never seen NOG fight like that before, he looked terrible. That being said, if Mir tries to fight that way with Lesnar…Ptff, Brock will put his lights out and quick.

Mir is not faster, stronger or better, he's the same fighter he was, Brock is the better, stronger and quicker fighter so look out Mir because the new UFC monster is coming for revenge and nothing will save you this time. Mir is hype and he's gonna get his ass handed to him by Lesnar, plain and simple.

By the way, the comments regarding Lesnar fighting on the ground…Lesnar is a wrestler, he's use to fighting off the ground and would fight VERY well off the ground, don't let the break in the momentum of the fight leading to a rookie mistake fool you, Brock is an awesome athlete and is about to become the Undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion and likely inside two rounds.
