UFC 95: Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Stevenson Likely

diego sanchez tuf 7 finale

The Ultimate Fighter season one winner Diego Sanchez (19-2) will likely make his lightweight debut against Joe “Daddy” Stevenson (29-9) at UFC 95 on Feb 21st from the O2 Arena in London, England.

Sanchez has been flirting with making the move to lightweight since loosing to wrestlers Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch back in 2007.

The middleweight winner of the first season of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter” has verbally agreed to face Joe Stevenson at UFC 95 on Feb. 21 at the O2 Arena in London, according to a source close to the New Mexico native. Bout agreements have yet to be signed, however, said the source. [Sherdog]

Joe “Daddy Stevenson has become the UFC’s lightweight litmus test. With a win over over Stevenson you are in contention for a title shot. With a loss you fall down and fight the UFC’s “Blue Collor” fighters, such as Clay Guida, Tyson Griffin or Kurt Pellegrino.

  1. i don't think this is good for joe, i see another loss.him and diego ar similair except diego been in the ufc longer i now joe has alot of fights but not as many in the ufc and another loss couldn't be good right now.

  2. i think this is a pretty good matchup. i give the advantage to sanchez because i think he will do a lot of damage to joe inside the guard. neither guy is stellar on the feet. joe's gameplan has to be to use his wrestling to prevent diego from taking him down.

  3. dane drebin says:

deigos hands looked really good last fight i think his gunna mess joe up on the feet and then pound him out or submitt him. i think deigo is gunna be up for a shot at the title in no time. him vs sherk could be an interesting fight

  4. yeah, I have been wrong about Stevenson many times, so I no longer have faith in him.

  5. Like I said Stevenson is overrated. Well atleast he was overrated now I think ppl see that he isnt a top 10 LW. He will get rocked by Deigo standing and he will be dominated on the ground. I really couldnt pick a way for Joe to win other then a lucky punch.

  6. I agree with Steve on the overrated however I think BOTH of these guys are overrated, this is a weight class that's getting the shaft because bj is busy trying to fight every guy not in his weight class

  7. They should start having fights in the ufc where the loser leaves the ufc and loses his contract. All seriousness this sucks for Joe. IF he fights Diego Sanchez then his last three opponents will be: Diego, Florian, Penn. It almost could not be any tougher than that. I agree though I don't see him winning UNLESS Diego has problems with the weight cut.

  8. They have unsaid fights where the loser leaves. But thats a good point. For all of those fighters that have the gameplan of outpointing their opponent to a decision in a series of fights. A loser goes home match would be a good idea to motivate them.

  9. I think it would depend on how good of a fight he puts up whether or not he gets booted from UFC. His Penn fight was entertaining, Florian fight was short. If it is a war between him and Sanchez, I think he'll be around for a while longer.

  10. dane drebin says:

he won the ultimate fighter i doubt they will get rid of him unless he loses to a nobody. losing to penn and florian is a lot better than what kendal groves been doing

  11. Let's remember. Diego has to get down to 155 first. Have you seen him lately? He looks 195. If he can loose the weight, loose the girlfriend, loose the distractions, and focus. He will be a monster at 155.

  12. If they're keeping Vera on still, there's no way they getrid of Stevenson…at least he's Fun to watch, and you think, at some point, he might actually do it..instead of watching Brandon Vera…"the truth"?….the truth is if he doesn't get in there and try to put somebody down & out in his next fight…Dana should groom Philip Norvir as his filipino ambassador and have vera as the newest ring girl…he needs to put the weight back on and start fighting again like he did before…most frustrating dude to watch fight because you know he could do more if it mattered enough to him!
