True enough, But....... A champ can hold on to the belt as long as he doesn't fight, if he loses it in his first defence, the time he held the belt for means nothing!!!!
you have to defend the belt to be a true champ!!!!
it's about how many time's you defend the belt, not how long you hold it.

I think the ufc is trying to keep "the champ". Everyone saw that rampage won the last title shot. Now they are going to keep their champ waiting and keep holding the belt. Machida is supposed to fight forrest now. He doesnt have to prove anything else. Just like thiago he is supposed to fight for the title now. If they fight each other before fighting forrest their champ will have more time holding the belt.

I am going to say this will be a good fight. I think Thiago can win, however I dont think he will. Thiago does his damage on the ground, a la lets say tito ortiz, and we all saw how well he faired against Lyoto. I think one of these guys will get a title shot in the next year. Machiada iif he wins, Silva if he wins and beats another quality oppoinent, maybe Wandi, Bonner, Hendo. Machiada is tough but hes not a former champ so beating him, although undefeated wont be enough for a shot when that line is starting to get long. Seeing how the former champ looks to be handling some personal "issues" for a bit this fight and liddell rashad should pretty much tell us who's getting the next shot or getting in the #1 contender fight.

Fantastic job by UFC matchmaker Joe Silva. Pitting up and comer Thiago Silva against established and rising star, Lyoto Machida should determine whether or not Machida is ready for a title shot. If Silva wins, which would be by far, the biggest victory of his career, I still do not believe it would warrant a title shot. Although it would raise Silva's UFC record to 5-0, beating one contender is not deserving of a title shot. If that were the case, then Machida would already be in line after crushing Tito Ortiz and Sokoju. Either way, this is a fantastic match up and I eagerly await it.
