UFC 167 Results: Georges St. Pierre vs. Johny Hendricks Results and Post Fight Press Conference

UFC 167 took place on November 16, 2013 from Las Vegas, NV. The main event was a welterweight championship fight between the champion, long time veteran Georges St. Pierre, and the challenger, dynamic up-and-comer Johny Hendricks.

Round 1: Both fighters come out and touch gloves in the center. St. Pierre throws a quick leg kick and jab. Hendricks throws a strong left hand and St. Pierre ducks under and gets a takedown. They both roll and St. Pierre gets a guillotine choke for a split second. Hendricks gets out and they stand in the clinch. They knee each other’s legs repeatedly then Hendricks works GSP over into the cage. After several knee strikes the ref separates them and they restart in the center.

GSP gets a hold of one of Hendricks legs looking for a takedown. Hendricks hits GSP with a couple of strong shots, and GSP works him into the cage. GSP drops down while holding Hendricks up against the cage, getting into a better position for a takedown. Hendricks drops some solid elbows to the side of his head and GSP stands back up. Hendricks is able to flip GSP around and take him down. Hendricks works him against the cage for a moment, then they separate.

GSP starts trying to establish some offense, throwing jabs and kicks. Hendricks rushes forward attempting some strong punches. GSP is able to dodge his attack. GSP throws a head kick that lands slightly on Hendricks head, but he takes it and shakes it off. GSP has some slight swelling above his eye, and the round ends with them in the center.

Round 2: They meet in the center again and touch gloves. GSP immediately starts with a quick jab and leg kick. GSP opens up with several jabs and kicks in a row, while Hendricks constantly moves forward. Hendricks catches GSP with a left that staggers him. Hendricks moves in and lands a solid left, right combo that stuns GSP even more. GSP holds on to Hendricks, giving himself several seconds to recover. The ref separates them briefly to get Hendricks mouthpiece back in. Hendricks swarms GSP again, landing a couple hard punches that wobble GSP again.

Hendricks drops down looking for a takedown. GSP holds onto him enough to recover and break away. They face off once again in the center. The action is back and forth with both fighters throwing and landing punches, kicks, and knees. Hendricks looks unphased with GSP’s striking and he drops his hands and continuously moves forward. GSP face looks a little worn for just the 2nd round.

They continuously trade strikes for the remaining 2 minutes of the round, with neither fighter landing anything too damaging. The round ends with both fighters clinching in the center.

Round 3: They both touch gloves again in the center and continue where they left off in round 2. GSP opens up with a solid jab that he lands over and over. Hendricks counters several times, landing a couple jabs and one or two knees to the body. GSP seems really comfortable with his striking and is landing more frequently between the two. Hendricks is not landing as much, but is constantly throwing counter punches after GSP’s attacks.

Hendricks seems to be the fresher of the two, but GSP is the busier fighter. GSP is landing the jab over and over again, but Hendricks just takes it and walks forward. GSP’s face tells another story as it is all busted up, swelled and bruised. Hendricks seems to have slowed down slightly, but continues throwing shots. Hendricks ducks under one of GSP’s punches and drops down for a takedown. He works GSP back into the cage and holds him there for several seconds. He completes the takedown and gets into top position, landing several hammer fists to GSP’s head. GSP tries to land some punches from the bottom, but they don’t do much damage. GSP holds Hendricks neck trying to control his posture. Hendricks lands a couple more shots, then GSP is able to scramble to his feet with only 10 seconds left. The round ends with Hendricks holding GSP against the cage.

Round 4: They touch in the center once again and they continue the action, with GSP initiating the strikes. He starts throwing the jab, landing it several times. Hendricks circles, ducks, and blocks them, but several still get through. Hendricks rushes forward throwing several hard shots. GSP ducks and his momentum causes him to fall backward. Hendricks gets into top position and tries to establish some ground and pound.

GSP does a good job of defending from the bottom, controlling Hendricks posture. Hendricks still continues to work, landing an elbow and a punch. Hendricks is not doing too much damage from the top position, but continues to work. He throws punches to the body but not hard shots. He finally allows GSP to stand, and GSP’s face is now streaming blood down his face. They circle each other and GSP continues to launch his attack of kicks and jabs.

Hendricks rushes forward several times throwing some hard punches. Most of them miss but a couple land. GSP gets a hold of Hendricks and walks him into the cage. Hendricks immediately reverses it and gets GSP against the cage. Hendricks drops down looking for a takedown. GSP defends, and both men tussle back and forth looking for a takedown. GSP gets Hendricks back against the cage and holds him there briefly. Hendricks lands a knee to the thigh and reverses the position once again. The round ends with Hendricks holding GSP against the cage.

Round 5:  They touch for the final time in the center. GSP immediately opens up with jabs, kicks, and a takedown attempt. GSP works Hendricks up against the cage for a moment, but Hendricks is able to once again reverse it. They separate and GSP throws a high kick and takes Hendricks down. He presses Hendricks back against the cage but Hendricks reverses it yet again.

GSP reverses the position, then seconds later Hendricks reverses it. The ref separates the two and they face off in the center. GSP moves forward throwing kicks and jabs, even though his face is swollen, cut, and bleeding. GSP attempts a strong one, two punch combo, then drops down for a takedown attempt. Hendricks does a good job of defending the takedown, keeping GSP from completing it for several seconds.

GSP continues to work for the takedown with only a minute left in the fight. He holds Hendricks leg in the air, working hard to get a final takedown. GSP is finally able to get Hendricks down and quickly works to try and take his back. Hendricks is able to stand back up and GSP works him back into the cage, still holding his waist. GSP drops down slightly, grabbing Hendricks legs for another takedown. Hendricks is defending well and GSP stands back to his feet. Hendricks is able to grab GSP and reverse the position, putting GSP against the cage. Hendricks drops down looking to get a takedown, but GSP gets one of his arms for a possible submission. With only seconds left in the fight, neither man is able to advance their position, and the round ends.

After deliberating briefly, the judges awarded the decision to GSP. Georges St Pierre defeats Johny Hendricks by unanimous decision and remains the UFC welterweight champion.
