UFC 111: Frank Mir vs Shane Carwin – Interim HW Belt

frank mir

With Brock Lesnar out of commission indefinitely, Frank Mir and Shane Carwin will face-off for the “Interim” UFC heavyweight belt at UFC 111 on March 27 in Newark, NJ.

Former UFC heavyweight champion, Frank Mir (13-4) is coming off a impressive guillotine submission victory over French kickboxer Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 “Penn vs Sanchez”.

Undefeated Shane Carwin (11-0) was in line to take on Brock Lesnar for the heavyweight belt at UFC 106 before Lesnar came down with a severe intestinal disorder, forcing him out of the fight.

The fight has been verbally agreed upon, but contracts have yet to be signed.

  1. the HW picture doesn't make sense. where are cain velasquez and junior dos santos in the picture? it would make better sense to put mir vs santos (striker vs striker) and then carwin vs cain (wrestler vs wrestler). then the winners would fight for a interim belt and then face brock lesnar.

  2. I agree that it doesn't make sense, but I'd rather see Big Nog in the mix. Forget about his loss to Mir, the healthy version of Minitaro has a shot a beating any of the top heavys.

  3. Shogun of Harlem says:

the heavyweight division is in limbo

  4. Shogun isnt the UFC HW division always in limbo?

I hate interim titles. it reminds me off all the BS titles in boxing.

If Lesnar can't fight in 2010 strip him, otherwise let him get better and defend his belt.

  5. I agree they could easily set this up like a final four thing have tow fights and then winners fight for belt. i dont like mir getting a shot already when their are other guys doing good things that you could say deserve a shot

  6. How about,

    Mir vs Carwin -

    Nog vs Cain –

    [Winner vs Winner] vs Lesnar

    [Loser] vs Dos Santos

  7. i like the mini tourney idea, winner gets lesnar if he is ready or the belt if he is not. i aslo don't think they should make carwin vs mir for the interim.

  8. carwin will work overr Mir

  9. why havent any of u mentioned ROY NELSON!!! lol

  10. he needs a few wins first.

  11. A tourney would make for THREE pay per views in as much as make MORE money and make three headlining and exciting pay per views. Dang some of you guys should be putting together these fights for Dana and crew. It would certainly be more exciting and get more people to watch instead of just a couple of crappy ppv's and then one good one.

  12. Yo dereck Mir is not a Striker

  13. it'd be cool if they did the mini tourney all in one ppv.

I agree with dereck tho, dos santos should be in the picture.

  14. Just got home and read this bullshit. Man I cant belive it. I agree wid you guys lets have a tourney. The way Mirs luck has been going he might win aginst Carwin but I got Carwin on this, hell I had Kongo last week but I was wrong. If Mir wins this fight aginst Carwin, hope he dose'nt, I cant belive I'm saying this, but I hope Brock comes back and pulls that horseshoe out of Mirs ass and gets rid of it this time. I dont like Brock but I cant stand Mir. I was hopeing to see Brock vs Carwin, hope things go Carwins way and not Mirs

  15. just to clear some stuff up, mir is a grappler first, but he has definitely transitioned into a striker. he prefers striking in all of his latest fights. mir is pretty well rounded.

mir beat kongo because kongo hasn't completely recovered from the beating cain gave him. carwin was about to fight for the title, and now he has to get through a hefty challenge in mir first??? interim titles remind me of all the belts in boxing. both nog and mir have not fought anybody of significance or fought long enough yet to fight for the title again. mir had like an unprecedented number of shots at the title and still doesn't make >$100K in the ufc. that's respect and disrespect right there.

right now, carwin, dos santos, and cain need to be in the picture. don't even mention couture because he also needs to fight his way back. crocop is still recovering mentally from all the ufc beatings he has received. i think the tourney should be cain-carwin and dos santos vs mir. nog shold fight somebody else first to work with way back up. so should randy.

  16. i hope carwin wins because lesnar hasnt faught that m,any times in the ufc yet and most of them have been against mir lol

  17. WTF how did mir get this ??

how's pee pee did he suck ?

  18. Carwin Vs them all. He'll one need a minute for each fighter. :)

I thiink its a big pile of BS that Mir is above Cain for a title shot.

  19. maybe cause he was a champion at one time ? was Cain? or Carwin ……ever?

  20. This is BS, Mir doesnt deserve this he just lost to the champ so to me and alot of others that puts you behind at least 2-3 or more fights before you get another shot. So because of the way he beat Kongo he gets to jump in line to the top?? Bad example for the UFC to set this isnt how it goes in the other divisions just ask Koschek and GSP when he lost the title to Serra he had to fight his way back in the picture at least 2x.

I hate Mir so obviously i will be going for Carwin as i originally wanted to see Carwin vs Lesnar as that to me is a better fight than a Mir vs Lesnar 3. I am pissed the UFC has just made me realize how they pick and choose there champions i understand this is a business but damn why not just suck on his balls a little more Mir.

  21. i agree with tim, beating kongo should not jump him past everyone else and who wants to see mir vs lesnar again? maybe down the road after they have both faced other guys but its to soon to have a trilogy for lesnar when he only has a few fights.

  22. well look at Marqurat and hendo. I honestly think that Marquart deserves to fight Silva and not Vitor.

  23. very true jay, belfort has done nothing to earn that title shot at mw either.

  24. I agree with Tim too. UFC just kind of took a shit on Carwin, Cain, dos santos and possibly Nog. I hope Mir loses.
