The Ultimate Fighter Season 9: Episode 9

tuf-9-banner

In last week’s episode, Dana White pulled the plug and informed Jason Pierce that he is out. His buddy, David Faulkner, has gag-reflex issues when it comes to his mouthpiece. All drama aside, American Jason Dent defeats Jeff Lawson. With one preliminary fight left, who will replace Jason Pierce to take on Brit favorite David Faulkner?

Team USA is pumped about Dent’s win, until Henderson breaks the news to the team about Pierce. Now the task is to figure out who is going to replace him. Having lost their initial fights, Mark Miller and Frank Lester are the only two available. Miller has a broken nose, but tells Dana that he is willing to take the fight as long as he can train. A very excited Lester is also willing and able — even toothless. Even with losses behind them, they have a helluva lot more heart than Pierce. With all the news, the ride home is quiet until Defranco asks Pierce about how it went down with Dana. In his defense, Pierce says he told Dana he wants to fight (liar, liar, pants on fire!).

Back at the house in the “Bash Room”, no one is buying Pierce’s BS. They know he didn’t want the fight. But Lester and Miller aren’t complaining. Lester is all about getting a second chance again considering how he got into the house in the first place. Same goes for Miller.

So it comes down to the doctors. Lester is cleared to fight, but Miller is not because of his nose. Now, Lester needs to be ready to go. Though I don’t particularly like Lester, I do agree with Dana in that Lester’s sheer will and determination to fight (eh, they’re just teeth) is impressive. If anyone should have the opportunity to go at it again, it’s him.

Hendo discusses game plan with Lester, but Lester looks nervous — and rightfully so. It’s only been a few days since his last fight and he knows he’s not 100% ready physically. Even with his beat up face, Hendo is sure that he will give it his all. The kid has heart, that’s for sure. Mr. Cheerful himself, Demarques points out that the odds are not in their favor and goes so far as to compare Lester to a pit bull with his teeth filed down.

As Team USA is finishing up their training, they discuss swapping training times with the Brits. The plan is to switch and give the Brits the early gym time. However, when it is brought up to Bisping, he gives Hendo a hard time about it, claiming he can’t just up and change it with no notice. Instead, he suggests that whoever wins the next fight can choose training time, which Hendo turns down. Not one to just “roll over and take it up the a$$” he must talk it over his team first. Holy pissing contest Batman!

After discussing it with his team, the Brits say no and Bisping really thinks it’s fair to let the fight decide it. Letting it slide for the moment, they line up for the fight announcement. While the Brits are walking in, Bisping, in all his maturity, squirts Demarques with his water bottle. In response, Demarques throws his hat at him in a hissy fit. Bisping claims it was because of his “racist” comment from the tennis match (the joke about Bisping being as white as a bandaid), which he is now told was made by (the white) Dollar. Wisely, Demarques storms out as Bisping apologizes for his actions. What an ass. Eventually, Demarques reappears and the announcement is made.

The next morning, the Brits are up early and are at the gym. Apparently, the “powers that be” overruled him and the times were switched. Faulkner is very confident about his game and his ability to win, but he’s preoccupied with his gag reflex. They decide to bring in a hypnotist. Hey, if Faulkner believes in it, go for it. He goes to see her, and her goal is to “reprogram” him. She tries to convince him that his mouthpiece is for protection and safety. Faulkner claims he wasn’t actually hypnotized. His limbs felt heavy, and he felt relaxed, but nothing else. I hope for his sake it works!

Sadly, Faulkner is not the only one have psychological issues. Lester is having trouble getting to the fight mentally. He wants to give it everything he’s got, just to prove it to himself. In his eyes, he feels like if he can get through this he can get through anything.

FIGHT DAY

ROUND 1:
Lester is keeping back at first, looking nervous. Finally, a good leg kick from Faulkner followed by another. Lester also lands one. Faulkner goes in on Lester and gets jabbed. Lester keeps throwing jabs at the air. Finally they really exchange and clinch. Lester is against the cage but neither do much. Faulkner lands a couple weak body shots. He tries to get Lester down but can’t. They separate and Faulkner lands a leg kick. A nice overhand from Lester. Some good head shots from Faulkner, but a good shot from Lester knocks Faulkner off balance. He shoots on Lester and they clinch. Not much action going on and they separate. Faulkner goes on the offensive and lands some good head shots. They exchange some nice clean shots. Faulkner comes in and Lester lands a great jab on Faulkner’s jaw. Faulkner moves in and they clinch. The round ends with zero action, though I’d give the round to the more aggressive Faulkner.

ROUND 2:
The round begins the same as the first. Ho hum until Faulkner spits his mouthpiece out! He gets it back and they resume. A good overhand from Lester is followed up with a good leg kick from Faulkner. A good head kick from Lester and he’s on the offensive. They clinch and Lester lands a solid knee to the ribs. They separate and Lester is throwing punches that land. They clinch in the center and Lester is landing knees all over the place. Faulkner pulls back for an uppercut, but doesn’t do much. More knees from Lester. Faulkner tries for an overhand but misses. They’re back to clinching against the cage, but both are visibly tired. Faulkner lands a good knee, but so does Lester. Faulkner backs up and Lester lands a good punch. They are both just swinging wild and tired. A nice jab from Lester followed by two more. There is more clinching with nothing. A brief exchange and the round ends. This round was all Lester.

A third round is anticipated by all…

And a third round there will be. In their corners, Lester is being pumped up, while Faulkner is just shaking his head in denial. He says he just can’t do it. No matter how much he’s told he can do it and that he’ll regret it, Faulkner just won’t get up. The fight is called and Lester wins.

Frank Freakin Lester. The guy loses his fight to get in the house, but is then brought back in as an alternate. He wins that fight (barely) in controversial fashion only to lose his first real fight in the house while getting his teeth literally knocked out. He gets yet another chance and manages to “out heart” quite possibly the toughest guy on Team UK. This kid is unbelievable. If some the guys had half his heart….wow.

Bisping is PISSED about the Americans gloating, so he storms off. He rounds up his guys and nearly breaks the door down in anger. Bisping feels like Faulkner threw the lead away. Faulkner, however, feels relieved and doesn’t regret it. He even goes so far as to joke about pursuing movies or pro-wrestling. A frustrated Bisping can’t listen to it anymore and calls out his four semifinal guys. They are told not to give up, to give it all they’ve got. They seem pumped, or maybe they just don’t want to be lumped in with Faulkner.

Team USA is proud of Lester, who is just overwhelmed and shocked. Hendo says he has a mental toughness you just can’t teach. Agreed.

Next week:
Richie goes off on Pierce. Semifinal picks are decided — will teammate fight teammate? Two welterweights battle to secure their spot in the finale. If next week is anything like tonight, it’ll be interesting to say the least!

  1. Wow i hated Frank at first and niow he won me over a little.. we all know Frank will not go any forther then Quarter finals..Nick or Dermakis or The guy that wooped his ass last time can Kill Frank..

I would love to see Kyle Vs Frank..Klye is the guy that knock him self out when they fought to make the TUF show..

  2. dane drebin says:

    HAHAHAHHAA i love it! 4-4

at first i hated this season because they picked such losers to be the american team but now im liking it. it shows that even when dana goes out of his way to pick a team the britts can walk through they end up tied goin into the semis against a buncha dousche bags. the britt's so called "best guy" looked horrible and gassed in the first.

"No mike i cant go out their for the third my throats way too dry."

    hahahaha i love it

  3. I would Hate to see team vs Team because i thought it was Uk vs USA?????

also I HOPE Dermarkis doesnt fight Nick till the Finals..Or The UK light weight fighters..

AND both the UK light weight fighters are better then the USA..

  4. ron shaw says:

damn how do you say you enjoyed the fight with a smile on your face after quitting. if not for yourself then be ashamed for your team. its true heart won this fight and i doubt faulkner will ever step inside the octogon again.

  5. ron shaw says:

tom i guarantee at some point its going to be team versus team. i'll put money down that the ufc wants a usa vs. uk fight in the finals.

  6. karma-killer says:

This has all got to be scripted 4v4 what are the chances?. What a let down, i knew right from the start faulkner was gonna be a pussy. Seems the UK does have as many moaning bitches as the USA afterall and credit to Frank and his missing teeth he deserves that win. Can't believe falkner, gutted he let the side down. And what is Bisping thinking i'm all for playing mind games But im guessing Demarques fights better when hes pissed off so last thing we want to do is piss him off seeing as he's the only guy on the USA team with a shot. He's gonna be more fired up train harder etc. This is looking bad for the UK now moral must take a nose dive.

  7. Bisping showed his true colors this episode!

    Dooosh!

  8. Oh and…

    "GUM SHIELD"

    LOL!!!

  9. WHODINI says:

    Bisping never did like him

  10. Bisping started out strong, but now he looks like a baby with all this drama

  11. Nichole Lesniak says:

I didn't like Bisping all that much to begin with, but this episode really cemented it for me. He can dish it, but he can't take it.

As for the season…I was starting to get a little bored. It's definitely starting to turn around.

  12. Porsche930_Pilot says:

Yea Mawpah Bisping really did show what he's all about, getting so pissed off because the US team were chanting after the win and a bunch of other stupid things like not wanting to change training time and let the US guys have the afternoon for once. I can't believe Falkner, when he goes back into the dressing room and he says " ok well atleast I had a good time " LOL!!! like he's on a vaction and lost some card game or something and not that he just through away a chance of a life time. Yep oh well it was fun now lets go get some tea and crumpets.

  13. I agree Porsche930_Pilot.

I sure hope Hendo comes into their fight prepared and kicks some arse!!

  14. Cobra Clutch says:

Exactly, Tom! Me too! I hated Frank at first for gloating over winning by KO….um….the other guy knocking himself out after kicking Frank’s ass all over the octagon….but he’s won me over a little bit more. Now, I’m just neutral towards him. haha.

Nichole, amazing recap as always, and this was up right away, too. Incredible work.

So now the Brits are just as much pansies as the U.S. looked in the beginning. Either way, this still is not looking good for the sport. How the HELL did Faulkner ever fight three or four fights with a mouthpiece and his gag reflex?

Oh, and Bisping is pissed that the Americans are gloating? Awwww, poor baby. Like he didn’t say at the beginning of the season how he loved to rub it in to get into the Americans’ heads? What a friggin baby that guy is…and to throw water in Demarques’ face. Real classy, tough guy. Sneak attack and everything, then immediately tries to apologize and says “no big deal…it’s only water” … see if he feels that way if someone did the same to him. Lost ALL respect for Bisping after this season, and we’re half-way through.

    Go USA!

  15. Porsche930_Pilot says:

I have no doubt at all that Bisping is going to get a beating in their fight. Somebody's got to knock that whiner off his high horse and Henderson is going to be the one who does it. He's the type who doesn't say to much just takes it all in and he'll let loose when they meet in the ring. Bet on it, I am.

  16. i would be shocked if bisping wins this as hendo should dominate

  17. I can't stand bisping. Seriously. I didn't see this episode but after reading the report and responses, I am kind of glad to see these negative things pile up on the guy.

Every time he talks, i just want to punch him. (his hands behind his back of course hehe)

    i hope Hendo decimates him.

  18. dane drebin says:

hmmm where are all the rediculous UK posters on this site now talking shit? haha i love it

  19. What's up everybody.

I'm from London and after this episode I have to agree, I'm really sick of Bisping and his immature approach to life. Sure he can fight, but he's not a real man – he's a wanker, as we say over here.

It started when he didn't show for Dean Amasinger's fight; we all know it wasn't jetlag. He thought Dean would lose as his jits was so poor, and didn't want to be there after to see the US celebrate a certain win. Bisping makes for extremely embarassing television if you happen to be English.

As for the US team, whilst I admit at first I was pleased to see the UK do so well in the early episodes, I have to say these guys are now doing your country proud (Pierce excepted). Frank Lester definitely deserves special mention for his perceived turnaround in character. He's got heart and at the end of the day, that to me is worth infinitely more than polished skills in MMA. This show is a proving ground; a vehicle to find tomorrow's fighters and there is no shame in not being the finished article when you enter the series.

Good job Frank, you deserved to win. Here's hoping Bisping gets his mouth shut by Hendo come the day.

    Peace.

  20. karma-killer says:

I seriously think hendo will get beat by Bisping but this series has shown his real character and i don't like him anymore . I think Hendo's a bit to nice and laid back though and i think Bisping will rush the first round an get a stopage. If it wasn't for my English patriotism i would be rooting for hendo at this point given Bispings shit atitude. Even though i no longer care for his bulshit mouthy / cocky atitude i still want him to win for the UK and the future of mma over here.

  21. Make a note of this, in America you don't go up to someone a squirt water in their face. We don't really like that and as a society it is just not tolerated. "oh come on whats the big deal?" Well a couple hundred years ago these guys decided they didn't want to be under anyones thumb and the idea kinda stuck.

Frank Lester, Good job Sarge, perfect example what a hitch in the Military will do for you.

  22. lol i love American's coming out to gloat now….. especially as they were whinging and crying "FIX!"

in all seriousness, Frank is a joke and won due to the gassing (due to mouthpiece).

when UK win both weigh classes (like i expect them too) American's will once again claim the show is fixed.

  23. karma-killer says:

lol yeah exactly i espect if the USA win its because of their superior talent and they will say they expected them to win all along.

If the UK win it will be rigged (fixed) or Dana engineered it so that the UK's best fighters were up against the USA's worst or some bulshit excuse.

It can't just be a fair fight unless they are victorious.#

I think its a fair fight im just a little disapointed with some of our fighters commitment/fitness levels and i can understand why our american counterparts feel the same about their fighters. However its defo NO fix. Dana knows the minute he tries to change the format of the show to a more staged afair then the real fight fans will see through it and stop watching. Its a reality tv show and real life is always more entertaining. Some clever editing will take place but definatly no favoratism or handicap to one side or the other.

  24. Nichole Lesniak says:

Tazke – I don't think water being throw in your face is acceptable in ANY country, not just here.

Mike – funny, I must've missed the gloating. I saw a lot of people happy that the americans made a come back, but by no means was anyone gloating.

And the "fix" claim had nothing to do with who was actually winning the fights. It had to do with who was chosen for the show in the first place.

Question – how can you gas due a mouthpiece?

Dana changed the format LAST season, but that had to do with how you got into the house, not how you were chosen for the show. It's a BIG difference.

Funny how you guys are the ones whining now.

  25. spraying water in his face… would that be a form of waterboarding? lol

  26. Porsche930_Pilot says:

I've been watching this show since the second series and in that time I've never seen a coach that is even half the whiny bitch Bisping is. The thing is now everybody gets to see what punk he really is which I think is a good thing and now when ever he opens his mouth to the camera the worse he looks. As far as this fix bullshit or White setting things up as mentioned that's a load of crap everybody who comes into this forum at least just wants to see a good fight regardless of who wins or what country their from.

  27. dane drebin says:

nichole i agree with most of what you said but a mouth piece can cause you to gass if its too big. i had a mouth piece that was too big and not fitted correctly and its restricts ur breathing.

  28. Whinging? I'm only whinging and your lack of whinging.

    but as i said;

Winner and Pearson will win so its pointless engaging in an argument.

as for Dane's comment, did you actually look at how small Faulkner mouth piece was? it was tiny.

  29. karma-killer says:

Just watched the fight again, and if you put aside the fact that dave whimped out like a pussy because of being gassed. Does anyone else think if you score both rounds based on a point basis for accurate shots landed take downs etc then it should never have gone to the third. i have just added up the number of sucessful strikes by dave and they outnumber frank by 1/3. Anyone else care to try this?

  30. dane drebin says:

im not saying his mouth piece is wat cost him the fight at all. he has no heart and wussed out for sure. im just saying a few months about i had a bad mouth piece and it screwed up my breathing quite a bit. its easily fixed tho and im sure him being on the show they would have him a lot better mouth piece than i do.
