‘The Punk’ Josh Thomson Injured Again, Out Till December

Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson is injured again and will not be fighting until at least December.

“I was really just playing around, just working on my technique, and this kid, this little blue belt, grabbed a leglock–I was wearing a gi–and I couldn’t slide my leg out … He just bellied out on the leglock in the standing position and you just heard the bone go crunch. The hairline fracture turned into an actual break.”

“All I’ve been doing it hitting mitts and the bag, and doing the bike and Precor … Trying to stay in shape, doing what I can,”

“I want to get this whole interim title thing dissolved … I want all the complications of, who’s the camp and who’s not the champ…I mean, everyone knows that I am, but I’ve been inactive for a year and he deserves what he’s been given, but it’s time to put it all to a close.”

“I’d rather fight him my first fight back and I can move on with my career and he can move on with his.” [MMAWeekly]

“The Punk” underwent surgery to repair a broken ankle earlier this year. He was expected to return and defend his Strikeforce lightweight title against Gilbert Melendez at Strikeforce “Carano vs. Cyborg” on Aug. 15th, but lingering issues with his ankle forced him out of that fight.

With Thompson having not fought in over a year, Strikeforce decided to have Gilbert Melendez take on Mitsuhiro Ishida on the Aug. 15th card for the Interim Strikeforce lightweight champion, which Melendez won.

Thompson has his sights set on a rumored December 19th fight with Melendez.

If someone gets you in a leg lock tap out. After all you did just say you were just working on form. Sounds like the injury was deserving. The way Josh makes it sound like it is the blue belts fault. I am sure the guy feels horrible that he broke your ankle but bottom line is you really broke your own ankle time to man up to it.
