* Cyborg came in heavy at 152 pounds. She was given time to cut, but was only able to reach 150 pounds. The Commission approved the fight with a 20% forfeit of Cyborgs purse. UPDATE: Sherdog is reporting that Akano is refusing the fight, but this has not been confirmed by Strikeforce.

Akano’s manager, Shu Hirata:

“Gina [Carano] never makes weight, but they make everybody fight. It’s not fair … I think it’s really about time that we have to set the precedent that you should really make the weight.”

“[Santos] knew that she has to make 146 three months ago … So she hopped on the scale hoping the Japanese [fighter] would take the fight; just because, you know, usually [the] Japanese [fighter] doesn’t walk away from a fight. So I think they took advantage of [that].”

Another interesting note – Akano won the Smackgirl 128 pound title in 2006.

** Brandon Michaels failed to make weight. The commission will allow the fight to take place at a catch weight of 187.5 pounds. Michaels will have to forfeit 20% of his fight purse to Castillo.

UPDATE
Akano vs. Cyborg will happen after all, according to MMAWeekly. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker was able to get the deal done with Akano’s camp. Cyborg ultimately weighed in at 148 lbs. early in the morning.
