Rousey Says She Could Fight Santos at 145 lbs

Champion Ronda Rousey says that she could fight Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos at 145 pounds however she says that she does not need to do so. When interviewed by Sherdog Radio Network’s “It’s Time” Show with Bruce Buffer, Rousey says that Santos does not really have other options available besides her. “I think she’s a victim of her own cheating, whereas when she was doped up and she looked like she was so head – over- heels above all these girls, it made the women’s division look bad. Then she cleaned out her own division because of that.” Rousey further added: “Now she’s having to deal with the consequences of it. No one’s going to want to fight a cheater. I’m pretty much her only option and I’m chock full of options.”

Cristiane Santos has never fought since she failed a steroid test last year; she is ending a year’s suspension. Cyborg was also stripped of her 145 – pound title at Strikeforce. On the other hand, Rousey has risen to fame with a perfect fight card of 6 wins and no losses. She has defeated impressive female fighters like Charmaine Tweet, Sarah D’Alelio, Julia Budd, Miesha Tate and Ediene Gomes. Her most recent win was against Sarah Kaufman in a headliner at fight last August 18, 2012. “Rowdy” is famous for her trademark submission arm bar move that can tackle down any opponent under a minute of round one. She is Strikeforce’s 135 –pound champion and has challenged Santos to cut some weight and face her however the later responded by inviting Rousey to move up to 145 pounds for a match up.

Rousey admits that she had no problems before when she fought at 145 – pounds before. “I could, but I’m choosing not to because honestly. I don’t trust any of the drug testing. I’ve been doing this a very, very long time and I was in the Olympics with the most stringent drug testing in the world. You know a lot of those people are doping. There’s new advances in drug testing every single year because people find new ways to cheat.” She also added: “The only way I can really feel like it would be a fair fight is if it’s down at 135. If she’s doped to the gills and making 145, it’s not really that farfetched for me to think that someone not on steroids could move down a division.”

Rousey somewhat sees that a fight at 135 would give Cyborg a chance to redeem herself and is waiting for the latter’s acceptance any day.

Cyborg Needs to Cut Weight to Fight Rowdy Rousey

How will a matchup happen between Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos when the two fighters are weight divisions apart? According to Strikeforce commentator Pat Miletich, Rousey has the leverage which means Cyborg needs to reduce weight.

Last Saturday, Rousey was able to defend her 135 – pound Strikeforce title against Sarah Kaufman with her favorite and signature move, the arm bar. She managed to take down Kaufman in just a matter of seconds of round 1. After Rousey’s impressive victory, she challenged Santos, the promotion’s former 145 – pound champion; Rousey challenged the Cyborg to meet her at 135 but in response, Santos invited her to move up to 145.

Miletich was interviewed by the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show and he said: “With Cyborg saying she’s not going to drop down to 135 to fight Rousey, she’s not in the driver’s seat anymore.” He adds: “Ronda Rousey is in the driver’s seat. She’s the star of women’s MMA and she can kind of call the shots. If Cyborg wants the fight, well, she’d better start cutting some weight.”

Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos is a featherweight fighter from Curitiba, Parana, Brazil. She has an equally impressive 10 wins and only one loss in her career. Her recent fight was no contest decision against Hiroko Yamanaka in Strikeforce “Melendez versus Masvidal” in December 2011. Her only loss was to Erica Paes at the beginning of her career as a pro in Showfight 2. She was suspended for a year for a positive steroid test and as she was resting on the sidelines, Rousey has managed to shine at the spotlight.

Miletich talks more about Rousey: “She’s wrecking girls that are pretty much the best they can find, the best girls out there, and she’s toying with all of them,” He adds: “She’s unique. She stands above, just like an Anderson Silva who’s toying with people and wrecking them. Watching the artistry of it all, she’s a unique a unique individual and people will pay to see it.”

But Miletich cites some problems in the Cyborg versus Rowdy match up, Santos may give Rousey huge problems. She is a big fighter and is seen as strong and dangerous on her feet. There is of course one thing that she must never forget and that is to stay standing because if she fails, Rousey will be there to stop her. “You know what Ronda Rousey’s going to do. You know what her goal is and you’ve got to be good enough to stop it. That’s just as plain as it gets.”
