Is It Henderson versus Melendez at UFC on Fox 7?

Benson Henderson has recently signed his new contract at UFC and rumor has it that he is looking for his next opponent. The 29 year old lightweight champion from Glendale, Arizona, USA is being reported to defend his title from Strikeforce title –holder Gilbert Melendez.

There is already a date and an event for this match apparently it will take place at UFC on Fox 7 and  the date will be slated for April 20, 2013. Officials have already given a venue for this much-awaited event; it will be at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. To remember that it’s in this city and venue that Melendez has fought several times for his belt when he was still in Strikeforce.

Strikeforce has finally ended and most fighters have been absorbed by UFC. One of the most notable migrants is Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey who will fight Liz Carmouche on February 23 at UFC 157 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, USA. As fighters bid farewell to Strikeforce, Melendez is officially the company’s final lightweight champion.

Benson “Smooth” Henderson is UFC lightweight champion with an 18 win and 2 loss record. His last win was a phenomenal fight against Nate Diaz at UFC on Fox 5 headline fight via unanimous decision last December 2012. This win against Diaz was Henderson’s 6th consecutive win since August 2011 beating great fighters like Frankie Edgar (twice), Clay Guida, Jim Miller and Mark Bocek. He lost to Anthony Pettis in a headline fight at WEC 53 via unanimous decision in December 2010 and to Rocky Johnson way back in 2007 at Battlequest 5 – Avalanche when Henderson was just starting out his professional career.

Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez on the other hand is a lightweight champion with 21 wins and 2 losses. His last win was against Josh Thomson at Strikeforce – Barnett versus Cormier in May 2012 via split decision. This was his 7th consecutive win since 2009 beating impressive fighters like Rodrigo Damm, Josh Thomson (the first one was in 2009), Mitsuhiro IshidaShinya Aoki and so many more. Before this seven straight wins he lost to Josh Thomson in 2008 at a Strikeforce headline fight via unanimous decision.

A Benson Henderson versus Gilbert Melendez matchup is going to be the battle of the lightweights which will surely be a much-awaited fight by fans everywhere.

 

Indefinite Medical Suspension for Benson Henderson

Just days after the split decision match between Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar. Henderson received an indefinite medical suspension after the fight. This was confirmed by press from the Colorado Office of Boxing on Thursday. As a rule, Henderson needs to receive clearance from a physician before he defends his new lightweight belt against Nate Diaz which is scheduled on December 8.

Henderson recently won a controversial split decision match over Edgar; referee decisions became wildfire as most thought that Edgar had the best over Henderson. Their match was held last Saturday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver. It was also during this fight when Donald Cerrone defeated his former teammate Melvin Guillard in UFC 150 co-main event. Guillard on the other hand was also handed a medical suspension for 60 days after the match.

Other medical suspensions were also from the same night; featherweight Justin Lawrence and middleweight fighter Jared Hanman who were also given 60 days medical suspensions after knockouts from Max Holloway and Michael Kuiper respectively. Other fighters who joined UFC 150 who were also given medical suspensions; Dustin Pague and Eiji Mitsuokaha have been given 45 days each and Buddy Roberts and Ken Stone each received a short 30 day suspensions.

Getting through medical suspensions have been tough for most athletes, they need to get physically fit and not to fall back on their training as well. Training must be consistent but are usually trainer or medically supervised to get the most out of recovery and fitness.

In the case of Henderson, UFC 150 was not his first time in facing the fighter; the first time was at UFC 144. “Smooth” Henderson and was able to clench the victory and the belt over Edgar after a unanimous decision fight. It was a competitive fight which was thought to favor Edgar but then when the final results were out, Henderson was the best among Edgar according to a unanimous decision.

Henderson is a 28 year old fighter from Glendale, Arizona. He is the most competitive and the most wins with 17 wins and only 2 losses. His last fight against Frankie Edgar in UFC 150 was the second time he won over Edgar. This was also his fifth consecutive win from his loss to Antony Pettis o WEC 53 headliner. And even with an indefinite suspension he is still determined to win over Diaz in December.

Benson Henderson Beats Frankie Edgar in a Split Decision Match at UFC 150

Benson Henderson retains the Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight title as he wins over Frankie Edgar at the UFC 150 via split decision. Henderson captured the split decision over the former champion in the headliner fight at the UFC 150 held at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, USA.

The headliner fight was a split decision; two of the three judges Dave Hagen and Mark Van Tine scored the match 48 – 47 in favor of Henderson, the third judge Tony Weeks gave a 49 – 46 ruling in favor of Edgar.

After the match, Henderson commented: “I was confused.  The scoring on that one was a little weird. I thought 49 -46 but the judge was up close, so is this what it is? You always have to be concerned when it goes to the judges.”

Henderson’s fight plan was clear, he focused on kicks on Edgar’s legs which were effective in the early minutes of the match however, Edgar wised up and countered using his hands. He even managed to plant one on Henderson sending the fighter on the seat of his shorts in the second round. Fans and viewers clearly saw that rounds 1 and 2 were under Henderson’s control; the 5th round was all Edgar’s. On the other hand, round 3 and 4 were more difficult to call since both fighters were very competitive.

Henderson further commented: “Frankie’s tough,” remember that he was able to capture the belt from Edgar at UFC 144. “We all know how tough he is and his team is. They always bring it in rematches. I knew he would be tougher than in the first fight. I had to come in here and lay it on the line!”

Edgar has a few words to Henderson: “It don’t matter. I thought I brought it to him, but congrats to Ben. I’m upset, man. What are you going to do? I did [think I won]. I thought I brought it to him.”
