Updates on UFC Featherweight Championships

Anthony Pettis gets his New Year’s wish and that is to fight Jose Aldo, featherweight champion. Their much-awaited fight will happen in August 3, 2013 however there are no details of the venue and other matches that will be held for that event.

Anthony “Showtime” Pettis has been keen on losing weight for this event. From lightweight, he will need to train and diet to be fit and trim for featherweight; and since this event is months away, developments of his weight loss and training will surely be news on every MMA site.

Dropping from lightweight to flyweight is no small undertaking; many fighters have made this cut but managed to fail in the end. Pettis was expected to challenge the winner of the April 20 Benson Henderson versus Gilbert Melendez fight but it seems that UFC and Showtime has other plans for the determined fighter. He will have to diet, make strict cuts on his training and be confident to make his debut. But Pettis is confident that he is ready for this challenge; fresh from his three consecutive victories against Donald Cerrone, Joe Lauzon and Jeremy Stephens, “Showtime” is now ready to make this switch.

Pettis has 16 wins and only 2 losses in his professional MMA career. His last victory was against Donald Cerrone in January 26, 2013 at UFC on Fox 6 Johnson versus Dodson. Pettis has managed to kick Cerrone’s chance to capture a win in just 2 minutes and 35 seconds of round 1. His win over Joe Lauzon was another KO moment as Pettis gave Lauzon terrible kicks and punches to the body in just a minute and 21 seconds of round 1. This momentous win was at UFC 144 Edgar versus Henderson in last February 26, 2012.

On the other hand, Jose “Scarface” Aldo is a fighter to beat at 22 wins and only 1 loss. This fantastic fighter from Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil has been unbeatable since May 2006 with a 15 winning streak. His most recent win was over Frankie Edgar on February 2, 2013 at UFC Aldo versus Edgar via unanimous decision. Scarface’s only loss was in the hands of Luciano Azevedo in Jungle Fight 5 in November 2005 via submission.

The Aldo versus Pettis bout is just one of the magnificent fights to look forward to at the UFC Featherweight Championships in August. More featherweight fighter action will surely be co headliners for this impressive event.

Pettis vs Aldo, Josh Barnett rejects UFC, Vitor on TRT, and TUF 17

Anthony Pettis was quickly granted his wish to fight featherweight champion Jose Aldo. Dana White confirmed that the two will meet on August 3rd of this year for the UFC Featherweight Championship. So where does this leave Frankie Edgar who has decided that he will not rejoin the ranks of the UFC’s Lightweights.

The UFC offered Josh Barnett a contract, but Barnetts manager says they rejected the offer. When asked was it a money issue, Barnett’s manager was quoted as saying “The compensation part of the contract was fine, we didn’t even counter it. It was another particular that kept it from happening”. It makes it wonder if it could be some type of clause that deals with PED’s.

Speaking of PEDS. I wonder if Michael Bisping was aware that his opponent Vitor Belfort had the green light on taking TRT prior to their bout last month. Well he did, and it’s just another example of how uneven the UFC’s playing field is becoming.

On the third episode of TUF 17, Urijah Hall scored a devastating knockout over his opponent, one that I’m sure everyone in that house will remember. Furthermore he propelled Team Sonnen to 2-0, and once again in control of the next pick.

UFC on Fox 6: Demetrious Johnson vs John Dodson, and Rampage Jackson vs. Teixeira

On January 26, 2013 the UFC on Fox showcases its sixth event.

Headlining the event which will be held at the United Center in Chicago, will be Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson who will be putting his belt on the line against up and coming John Dodson.

While Johnson is more of a technical striker, Dodson possesses knockout power which can quickly turn the tide. Also on the card is the return of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson who will be facing off against a dangerous Glover Teixeira.

The majority of MMA fans would probably agree that Rampage Jackson is on the decline. Besides being a disgruntled fighter with the UFC, his last few fights have not been impressive, and compared to the current evolved MMA fighters of today he is very one dimensional. In addition, he will be going up against a very well rounded Teixeira, who has been on a tear finishing his opponents by several methods.

This is the last fight that Jackson has under contract with the UFC, and many suspect it will be his last. The UFC’s lightweight class is arguably the most stacked class in the organization. Two of the front runners in this class are Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis, and they will clash to determine who could possible face the winner of the highly anticipated lightweight championship between Benson Henderson and UFC newcomer Gilbert Melendez.

Also on the main card are featherweights Erik Koch and Ricardo Lamas. Koch’s only loss was to Chad Mendes, and he’s won his last four. Meanwhile, Lamas is currently on a 3 fight win streak, with one of those wins over Cub Swanson. Lamas has only two losses in his MMA career, both of those coming by TKO. While Koch has TKO’ed two of his opponents during his four fight win streak.
