Sports Illustrated: “Pride was overrated”

pride vs. UFC

In a recent article on SI.com, David Epstein tried to convince the readers that PRIDE FC was overrated. While some big loses have been featured lately in the media, Epstein statements tells me that he is not an educated fan of the sport.

Many current fighters in the UFC were former Pride fighters. Pride was a breading ground for great fighters, for years many talented Japanese and Brazilian fighters graced the Pride rings in favor of the UFC. Epstien assumes the fact that Ramage is a UFC fighter not a Pride fighter. Jackson has fought most of his career in Pride, 17 promotions vs. 2 UFC promotions coming into UFC 75. Dan Henderson who really should be at middleweight, held his own for 5 rounds with Jackson, making the fight very competitive. UFC fighters Chuck Liddell and Marvin Eastman had early KO loses to Jackson. To say Pride was overrated just shows lack of knowledge of MMA by the “Main Stream Media”.

Since the popularity of The Ultimate Fighter, the UFC has transformed itself into the top promotion in the world. Drawing talent from all over the world as well as creating a new bread of young fighter. This new fighter is skilled in various disciplines, eats clean and can go hard the whole fight. This is a far cry from the old days of the UFC, where many fighters had beer belly’s and partied the week before the fight. They were brawlers, heavy handed tough, but lacked many of the skills the new MMA Fighter has.

Now that PRIDE is no more, we have started to see the PRIDE talent spread to the various promotions. MMA has become so competitive a lose by top fighter is expected. It is more about who doesn’t make a mistakes as opposed to who is more talented. In the end its more about the fighter and not the promotion

  1. What an idiot, Anderson Silva and Rampage Jackson are from Pride and they have had nothing but success coming over. CroCop has had some bad luck but I bet he would do well at 205, Henderson would be a favorite at 185. We still have some heavy hitters in Wanderlei, Fedor, and Rua who havent even fought yet. This guy cant say anything about Pride being overrated yet.

  2. In my opinion, Pride was better…..actually thats probably not the best way to put it. I actually PREFERED Pride to the UFC and i for one am very gutted that it no longer exists. The fights were awesome, the rules made the fights most of the time non stop action. Kicks to the downd opponent and head stomps etc make it more interesting. As you cant just ly there. Although potentially dangerous, (good refereeing stopped it from being to bad) head kicks and stomps stop people wasting time. The UFC is good. But is far to big for its boots. Its the full contact version of WWE. Buy everything and take them off the air that we deem as a possible threat. Good business move, but shit for the sport.

  3. I liked Pride a lot too, it was fight after fight, a ton of people in the crowd that never really booed. I like watching the UFC, but I just hate the marketing, the 30 min in between fights, not being about to see all the fights, and them putting together 2 great fights, 3 good fights, and then filler for every show. Its just like the WWE where with the exception of 2 fights, you see setup fights where the person you know is probably going to win.

    Then they bought Pride, bought the fighters, it just reminded me of the WWE buying WCW.

    I read all of these message boards and it seems like if these rich promoters in other organizations would just listen to their buyers, they could make a good organization too. But they seem too cocky and want it their way. Bodog, EliteXC, ICON….its taking forever for them to make it to the big leagues. If the UFC had a contender, then they wouldnt be able to do whatever they want anymore with MMA.

  4. The UFC is going to do their little advertising schemes to make money. I'm with you, just give us the whole PPV and dont make us spend another 2 dollars/ fight to watch undercards. Want to know how boxing is better than UFC…they at least give you the whole show, watch it or not.

  5. Pride Vs UFC?

    Pride = head stomps

    UFC= lay and pray

  6. Pride = real fighting

    UFC = real WWE

  7. yah, everyone can bash UFC but I bet a few weeks ago when there were no events, you were counting the days before another UFC huh.

  8. this guy obviously was not a real mma fan. i also perferred pride over ufc. too bad they went bankrupt. i'd like to see some pride rules implemented into ufc. like the yellow cards. i think there is way too much stalling in the ufc. especially guys like tim sylvia and tito ortiz. i bet they'd try a little harder to finish a fight if they cut some of their prize money. and knees and kicks to head on the ground. i'm gonna miss shoguns soccer kicks to his opponent's head.
