Rashad Evans Granted Immediate Title Shot With Forrest Griffin

evans knocks out liddell

After the stunning second round knockout of Chuck Liddell on Saturday night, UFC President Dana White announced that “Sugar” Rashad Evans will be granted a immediate title shot with Forrest Griffin, rumored to take place at UFC 92 on December 27 in Las Vegas.

White announced the news a the UFC 88 post fight press conference, but would not confirm the date.

Lorenzo (Fertitta), Joe (Silva) and I got together and thought yeah, he deserves the title shot….How could you say, ‘No, he doesn’t deserve the shot’ after [the Liddell fight]?”

  1. awesome i cant wait (an epic amount of sarcasm)

  2. Seriously shouldnt Rampage get a rematch first? but then again we dont know what his mindset is like right now but how can they overlook a rematch especially since the fight with Forrest and Rampage was so close and could of gone either way. Bad decision i think but it works out for them either way business wise as it makes sense to put the UFC season winners against eachother for the title. If Rampage fights Silva and wins the i could see him fighting the winner for the title that is unless hes in jail by then. Should be a good fight anyways. Cant wait could go either way i dont know who will win this one is a toss up.

  3. ha forest should beat Evans…

sean 1 vs season 2 for the belt crazy

  4. This division is so stacked with so many permatations on who should fight who, would never happen but it would be real interesting if the had a tournament like back in the nineties to decide the no1 contender.

  5. i don't know i think its pretty close, i am not a evans fan but i will not underestimate that much again.

  6. I'm calling it: Rashad Evans is going to be the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion!

  7. Scooby Doo says:

genno you are wrong, if dana/Lorenzo are smart they should do a night of fights

    Forrest vs Rashad

    Re-match W.Silva vs Chuck

    Dean of Mean vs Hendo

    Rampage vs Shogun

    Franklin vs T. Silva

Re-match The Sandman vs H. Alexander

I'd buy that for a Dollar!

and a couple of up and comers on the under card!

Who is Next? to be Champ! and go from there. Damn! I should be the UFC match maker D. White give a Job.

  8. Oswald Gobblecock says:

"Seriously shouldnt Rampage get a rematch first?" No, what UFC champ ever has gotten and immediate rematch? Chuck didn't after his lose to Rampage.

  9. Scooby what about Machida and Sokujodu anderson Silva. That is just a couple of LHW fighters that could take Rashad and should be in the runnings for big fights.

  10. Chuck not getting a rematch was different. Chuck got finished and the fight was one sided not to mention it was the second time rampage had whipped his ass. With Forrest and Rampage a lot of people thought rampage won and then again me and a lot of others thought Forrest won. I personally think Rampage would win if they fought again but it would be another war just like the first one. I would rather see the rematch but I guess Forrest will have to beat the hell out of Rashad first. Rashad reminds me of Diego. He is always gonna be better then good but never great. He just dont have it when it comes to fighting guys like rampage, shogun,Machida, and with anderson Silva in the picture I dont think he has much of a shot at even if he does win the belt to keep it. Like with Rampage Rashad will never be able to out wrestle him or outstrike him. He definetly cant KO him like he did Liddell. Lets face it Liddell is older and the loses lately arent flukes. He has lost some power in his hands, his speed and even mentally he is weak. Not weak in a sense of being scared or having fear of losing but in a way where he is so mentally confident in himself that he doesnt feel the need to block punches but try and counter while keeping his hands below his waist. We all saw Rashad get outstruck by Bisping and grinded on by Tito. Now a days guys come up with good game plans and stick to what they do best. Well there are a lot of ways to beat Rashad and Forrest is gonna show that. Now think about this Rampage can easily outsrike Rashad and his has a huge Power advantage. Wrestling I would have to go with Rampage because after seeing Rampage man handle dan and seeing his past fights with guys like Randleman where he was able to stop the takedown I see no problem in him stuffing anything that Rashad throws at him. So rampage is overall a better fighter with a better chin, Experience and overall talent. Yes Rashad is good but for all of you guys thinking that he is the next champ I think NOT. Now I would like to see chuck try and take a guy down and try and ground and pound or even show off the BJJ he says he has. The thing is if he was that good at ground and pounding you would think Hacleman would make a plan to try that. Not just like a little takedown to steal the round like he did against Wanderlei but like a tito ortiz game plan. Srtike to get ur opponent to open up and as soon as he does shoot and easy takedown. Anyone esle want to see Forrest vs Rampage more? I admit that having Season 1 winner and season 2 winners fight for the title is appealing I just dont see either of them holding the belt for very long. Too much talent and not only is there a lot of talent but there are SO many different styles like machida A. Silva Wanderlei who will make it a war, Rampge who can ground and pound hits like a truck and can get hit by a baseball bat in the head and still come forward. I am excited to see some good fights in the LHW divsion. The UFC can put them together so do it. Process of elimination. They could do this by simply making a rankings list. Just top 10. That way #1 and #2 always fight and there will never be a huge jump in the ranking like what happened with rashad.8 mn tourney lets do this shit Pride Style but dont have them fight 2 times in the final. Let them have that month to prepare for the finally. Dont want to see a replacement win the belt after losing once lol I hate that shit.

  11. I twill be hard for anyone to hold the LHW belt for long b/c of how many styles there are. Machida A. Silva Rampage, forrest, Shogun,Jardine, the always tough Wanderlei. I mean they all have crazy styles thats what makes the division so great. Anything can happen with so many of these fighters.I know I didnt list a few but u get the picture. Forrest and Rashad arent dominate enough to have the belt for long. But it is nice to see the belt up for grabs instead of the 5 yr one champ deal this will keep the belt going around and make for better fights I think.

  12. If Rampage would have gotten a title fight, right after losing it, then UFC would become WWE and would make as much sense as Brock getting a title shot after three fights, with only one win in the UFC.

  13. LHW is the deepest talent pool in the ufc and it’s hard for the current champ to hold the title for a long time. I wish forrest all the luck

  14. Scooby, that card sounds AWESOME. Steve, I agree about pretty much everything you said. Griffin has good takedown defense and I personally don't think that punch that put Liddell down would knockout Griffin, just make him uglier.

  15. Are you kidding me. You might not like Rashad but just look at the replay of that punch and it was powerful and right on the chin. Chuck doesn't get knocked down much…much less out cold. You have to give Rashad some credit for power. I can't say if that punch would KO Forrest but I would bet it could.

  16. I also would have said the same thing about Rampage's punches, but look what happened. Griffin can take a lot more to the chin than Liddell can.

  17. I would have also said the same thing about Rampage's punch, but look what happened. Griffin can take more to the chin than Liddell can. I never said Rashad's punch wasn't hard, or that he's not good, I just don't think he will be good enough

  18. I'm not sure why that typed twice. I tried to delete the first.

  19. Alex news flash Liddell had been dropped in every single fight since getting KO'd by Raampage. So yeah he does get dropped a lot just not KO'd out cold like that. But if he kept his hands up then maybe he would have blocked that punch. I know it wasnt all about blocking since Liddell tried to counter Rashad and was just beat to the punch but I think that Liddell is so cocky or WAS so cocky that he didnt even thnk Rashad could hurt him but Forrest doesnt think like that and he wont stand and trade with anyone anymore. Thats not what he is successful at. He is good at picking people apart and tries to avoid the heavy hits as best he can and will not let that punch hit him. Great yeah Rashad has some power but it wasnt just the power of the punch but how and where it hit chuck. I mean chuck was fully extended and committed to his punch and it completly just caught him right perfect on the chin so it wasnt all about power but it was powwerul but I wouldnt go as far as to say that he punches close to as hard as Rampage or Wanderlei.

  20. CHUCK has been getting dropped frequently as of late but, the LHW division has never been as deep as it is right now. For everyone who thinks RAMPAGE should get the 1st title shot you are right because of the manner in which he lost he wasn't dominated or hulmiliated. BUT, BUT, BUT. He is facing felony charges for going balistic at JUAN IBARRA his trainer for overcharging him for a camp. That will hold up any matches for him until that is resolved. If SCOOBY was a fight promoter he would be a billionare. But DANA can't afford to have all his best fighters on one card.

  21. SUGAR RASHAAD does deserve it you can't argue this one he was already tagging CHUCK in the 1st round but that right hand in the second will probably be the UFC KO of the year. No one gave RASHAAD a chance especially by KO, and this was the biggest upset I have ever saw including SERRA VS GSP 1. I bet no one will underestimate RASHAAD again.

  22. i did not give rashad a real chance in that fight especially by ko, but i still think serra was a bigger upset with this being a close 2nd.

  23. i think if all thfighters where on one card and he charged 100 to watch ppv it would defenantly be worth it. big money. as a chuck fan i hate to see him go down but will love to watch rashad loose to forrest

  24. After the Rampage v. Liddell fight, and the masterful game planning that took place in that fight, people have Chuck's number now. You put Chuck up against a good striker who doesn't play into Chuck's "chase me" counter-punching game plan, and who doesn't constantly (hopelessly) try to take him down, and you have a winner. And when I say a good striker, I really mean they don't even need to be that great. Just more of a traditional striker with good fundamentals, ie boxers. Chuck's style is sloppy. He has power sure, but you frustrate him by using his counter-punching game plan against him and he comes out of his game-plan, opens up, and gets dominated by anyone who knows how to box. I can only assume the UFC matchmakers protected Chuck from any real threats for all those years because of all the money and notoriety he brought them as the recognizable face of the UFC.

Lyoto Machida should be the next up to fight Griffin, barring a Rampage rematch. No doubt about it. He was the no. 1 or 2 contender. Instead you have another TUF poster boy fighting the current "champ". Make no mistake, the ONLY reason Griffin is champ now is due to Rampage's poor training prior to the fight, at least partially due to the TUF coaching layoff. And poor judging. Griffin is a more intelligent fighter than he used to be, but the guy has no power! His one strong point is that he can take a hit! That does not a champ make. Still, considering Rampage is basically better at everything that Rashad does, Forrest should win this fight. Evans barely hung with Ortiz, who's really no longer a contender. What does that say? This is a fight born out of marketing potential, and trying to validate TUF fighters as legit, which they (mostly) aren't. Not to mention that if they went with Machida they could actually have the fight in a reasonable amount of time! Instead of a 6-8 month layoff between fights for christ's sake!!!

I'm sorry, there's just no excuse for the UFC to not have at LEAST one title fight in each and every UFC. The champs should each fight a minimum of 3 times per year…. The upcoming fight cards (including this last one) are a friggin joke. But with TUF you're removing one or two champs from that equation for at least 6 months. And when they come back from it, from past experiences, it seems like they aren't ready to fight. This in a career that is already relatively short. They're only in their primes for so long.
