It was Meza’s management who confirmed that Dias will not be fighting at the next UFC bout and instead Mendes will be welcoming Meza at the Octagon at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in Gold Coast, Australia.
Meza was interviewed regarding this fight and he said: “This is a huge opportunity for me. I am thankful that the UFC is opening this door. I can’t wait to get to Australia, step into the Octagon and show that I belong in this organization” Meza added: “I’ve been training hard already, helping Benson to prepare for his fight with Diaz, so there won’t be a huge adjustment for me to get ready for this fight.”
Yaotzin Meza is a featherweight from Phoenix, Arizona, USA. He currently holds 18 wins and 7 losses. Although his recent fight was a defeat against Andres Quintana in WMM – Region 4 –Round 1 in April 2012 he had 6 consecutive wins since 2010. He was an impressive fighter in Rage in the Cage and in Desert Rage Full Contact Fighting where he was able to submit fighters like Eric Regan and Brandon Shelton. This may be his first UFC exposure but Meza hopes he could make a grand entrance by beating Chad Mendes.
Chad “Money” Mendes on the other hand is a 27 year old featherweight from Hanford, California, United States and he currently has 12 wins and only 1 loss in his professional MMA career. He was in terrific form when he defeated Cody McKenzie in UFC 148 – Silva versus Sonnen 2 in July 2012 when he managed to KO McKenzie in just 31 seconds of round 1. Before this impressive fight, he suffered his only defeat in the hands of Jose Aldo in UFC 142 in a headline fight in January 2012. Since he began his pro career in MMA in 2008 he has managed to take down and defeat superb fighters like Cub Swanson, Anthony Morrison, Erik Koch, Mike Joy, Rani Yahya, Michihiro Omigawa and Javier Vazquez to name a few. Mendes is hoping to do his best despite the fight’s short notice. News regarding Dias’ injury remains to be revealed.
