Afflictions Tom Atencio Returns To Fighting June 27th

Call it a comeback, Affliction MMA’s VP Tom Atencio (1-0) will step back in the cage on June 27 for a mixed martial arts show at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss. 42 year old Atencio, will fight an unnamed opponent on the undercard of the PPV, which will be headlined by WWE Superstar Bobby Lashley vs. Bob Sapp.

Affliction Entertainments VP Tom Atencio:

“I love this sport and I am not a wannabe. I’ve fought before and I have respect for anyone who steps into the ring win, lose or draw. They’re doing something that most of the world will never do.”

What weight will he fight at?

“I think 160, maybe 155 … Not sure I can make 155 at 42 years old.”

Tom Atencio has had one previous fight, he defeated David Martinez by decision at Total Combat 7 back in 2005.

Also, heavyweights Pedro Rizzo and Gilbert Yvel will face each other on the PPV portion of the card.

Rumor: Affliction Done, To Call It Quits After Third Show UPDATE


Rumors are swirling that Affliction is looking to get out of the MMA promotion business after a third show. First, the rumor that Affliction VP Tom Atencio spilled the beans today on the Tom Leykis radio show [see below].

“The third show will be it. We dived into the MMA business for a reason. To put on good fights. We have done nothing but that. The third show will be it for us. We are taking a break.”

Michael Rome followed up that Affliction might be looking to the UFC to bail them out.

I learned in the last hour from someone high up at the UFC that Lorenzo Fertitta was contacted today by Affliction looking for a “beneficial” way out. Realistically, they want back in the Octagon.

Fedor Emelianenko, Tito Ortiz and Affliction VP Tom Atencio took part in the opening bell honors this morning at the NASDAQ. This is apparently what you get when you buy a huge banner above the NASDAQ on Broadway in New York city.

The Affliction crew is in New York, hosting a press conference to hype this Saturdays Affliction 2 “Day of Reckoning” fight between Fedor Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski.
