Japanese MMA star Takanori Gomi is expected to face UFC grinder Clay “The Carpenter” Guida at UFC 125 on January 1 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
With Japanese fighter Takanori “Fireball Kid” Gomi under UFC contract, Kenny “Kenflo” Florian is looking to add another big name to his win sheet.
“I see (Gomi) as a great opportunity to improve as a mixed martial artist and face one of the best fighters to ever fight as a lightweight … So for me, I’ve always had a lot of respect for the Japanese fighters and how they conduct themselves as martial artists, and obviously Gomi has accomplished a lot in the sport. To beat someone like that would be tremendous … Gomi is a very, very dangerous fighter … Whoever I face, I’m going to train harder than I ever have and smarter than I ever have. So for me, I always consider every fighter a threat, and certainly with Gomi, I consider him the ultimate threat.
“He has very, very fast hands. He can fight as a southpaw and a right-handed fighter, and he has knockout power. I do consider that his strongest weapon.” [MMAJunkie]
Florian is rumored to be considered for Gomi’s first fight in the UFC, although Florian has stated that nothing has been presented to him officially.
This will be Gomi’s second time fighting on US soil, the first being at PRIDE 33 when he was submitted with a Gogoplata by Nick Diaz. The Gomi vs Oliveira fight will be the final bout on the PPV portion of the Affliction “Trilogy” fight card.
