UFC 156: Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar and Alistair Overeem returns!

On Saturday February 2nd, the Mandalay Bay Events Center will host UFC 156. This event will not only showcase the highly anticipated match-up between current Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo  and Frankie Edgar, but it will also have the return of Alistair Overeem.

Flyweights Joseph Benavidez and Ian McCall will square off first on the main card. Both of these gentlemen are coming off losses to current champion Demetrious Johnson, however both of them proved to be very worthy opponents. I think it’s safe to say that the winner of this match will solidify themselves as the number one contender. Jon Fitch will take on Demian Maia in a welterweight match. Fitch has virtually beat everyone who is someone in the welters excluding GSP, and Demian Maia is 2-0 as a welter and has looked very impressive in his new class.

Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva will face the strong challenge of fighting Alistair Overeem who will be returning to action following a suspension he received resulting from a failed drug test last April. Overeem made his UFC debut defeating former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar by TKO in 2:26 of the first round. The victory earned him a Heavyweight Title shot against champion Junior Dos Santos.

However  Overeem was revealed to have failed his pre-fight drug test by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Overeem had a 14-to-1 testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio, over the allowed ratio rate of 6-to-1, and this is what led to his suspension. Most expect him to be on fire trying to once again earn himself a title shot.

Rashad Evans will battle Antônio Rogério Nogueira in a light-heavyweight match. This could prove to be rewarding for Nog if he were to catch a win. In contrast, I think Evans has to get a win, a loss could prove devastating to him working his way towards a title shot. Finally in the main event we have Jose Aldo squaring up against Frankie Edgar. This will be entertaining from beginning to end, with both fighters having great tanks and tremendous heart. Look for fireworks in this championship bout. As for a winner, flip a coin

Frankie Edgar Prepares for UFC 156 Featherweight Debut

Frankie Edgar is a former lightweight champion but he pulls out all the stops as he trims down for his featherweight debut match against Jose Aldo at UFC 158. Edgar has wowed fans as he managed to claim wins among lightweight fighters of his division but now it’s a different game as he slims down to featherweight and challenges Jose “Scarface” Aldo who has a perfect match record since 2006.

Will Edgar manage to defeat Aldo and prove that he is not just another lightweight fighter? Or will he give Aldo his 15th consecutive win? Watch how Edgar bares his training and how his weight loss techniques are paying off through this special UFC 158 video courtesy of UFC and YouTube.

To remember, Frankie “The Answer” Edgar has lost to Benson Henderson in UFC 150 headline fight via split decision in August 2012. This was his second time with Henderson as he was initially defeated via unanimous decision at UFC 144 in February of the same year. Before these 2 back to back losses, Edgar won against Gray Maynard in UFC 136 as he KO Maynard before round 4 ended in October 2011. Edgar is from Toms River, New Jersey and is now fighting for featherweight division with 15 wins. 3 losses and 1 draw in his professional career.

Jose Aldo however is just 26 years old from Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil which holds an extreme professional record of 21 wins and only one loss. His last fight was a win against Chad Mendes over a year ago at UFC 142 headline fight; he ended the match with a KO in less than 5 minutes of round 1. As mentioned, winning UFC 158 would be his 15th consecutive victory. He has managed to win over great fighters like Kenny Florian, Mark Hominick, Manny Gamburyan and Urijah Faber to name a few. His favorite move is a KO or TKO via his strong punches and knee combination.

UFC 158 will be on February 2, 2013 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Other fighters who will join Edgar and Aldo are Rashad Evans, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Alistair Overeem, Antonio Silva, John Fitch, Demian Maia, Joseph Benavidez, Ian McCallGleison Tibau and Evan Dunham to name a few. Frankie Edgar is Ready to Fight Jose Aldo

Frankie Edgar has decided to slim down to 145 pounds after he was found short against current title-holder Benson Henderson. “The Answer” recently revealed in an interview by Las Vegas Weekly that he is just a few pounds away from the weight limit and sees that he will be ready for the weigh-ins so he could fight featherweight title holder Jose Aldo. Their event is scheduled on February 2, 2013.

Edgar answered most of the interview questions with a positive tone: “I’m not that heavy. With the way I’m training, I’m already less than 10 pounds over, so we’re really not going to try that hard. I don’t think it will be an issue at all.” Edgar expects that his match against Aldo will be a much-awaited event given that Aldo has tremendous physical abilities.

“This is my seventh straight title fight, so you get used to it. But I want to make every one as special as it can be. Going down to 145 (pounds) and having the belt on the line definitely makes it a little more motivating.” He also remarks about Aldo’s extreme talent and abilities: “He’s a great striker, fast and explosive. He’s got great knees and great kicks. He might be the most dynamic striker we have in the sport, right here next to Anderson Silva.”

Frankie Edgar is a featherweight fighter from Toms River, New Jersey, USA. He currently has 15 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw in his professional MMA career. His last two fights have been a disappointment against Benson Henderson. The first was in UFC 144 via unanimous decision and the second was in UFC 150 via split decision. His last win was way back in October 2011 in a headline fight with Gray Maynard in UFC 136 via KO.

Jose Aldo on the other hand is an impressive fighter from Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. He is just 26 years old but already holds a 21 win, 1 loss record. His last fight against Chad Mendes in UFC 142 is his 14th consecutive win sin May 2006. He last lost to Luciano Azevedo in Jungle Fight 5 in November 2005 via submission.

UFC 156 is on February 2, 2013 in Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. This event also features great matches from Rashad Evans versus Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Alistair Overeem versus Antonio Silva, Jon Fitch versus Demian Maia and more.
