Kimbo Slice vs. Roy Nelson, A Real Possibility

According to an interview on FiveOncesofPain, IFL President Jay Larkin spoke with confidence, that a fight between Kimbo Slice and IFL Heavyweight Champion Roy “Big Country” Nelson (13-2) have been discussed. Nelson is a big bruising brawler, with a permanent beer belly, a perfect opponent for Slice. His IFL Heavyweight title will give some credibility to Kimbo who has been trying to shake the “Street Fighter” label since starting in mixed martial arts.

Nelsons only defeat in the IFL came by way of Split Decision to newly signed Adrenaline fighter and former IFL heavyweight champion “Big” Ben Rothwell.

“If Kimbo wins, we’ll make that match (Nelson vs. Slice) without hesitation,….We”ll do in on an IFL card or an Elite card – we don’t care. Promotions working together is the only way for this business to grow.”

Both Larkin and Shaw have worked together for over 20 years and the two were involved with numerous boxing co-promotions while Larkin was the head of SHOWTIME Sports. In fact, both Larkin and Shaw are responsible for the creation one of SHOWTIME’s boxing staples, “ShoBox.”

  1. thats kimbo first real test but idk if he can stop Roy he is very good on the ground and Has good carto but idk if he could take Kimbos Power punchs

  2. that would be a good match up i think, and we will finally see how real kimbo is or is not.

  3. I'm ready to watch this one! Big Country isn't the best fighter on the planet, but at least he has cred. There won't EVER be cross-promotion with the UFC, so these are the best kinds of fights he could hope for. Maybe Kimbo will get a crack at the Mainiac. I still forsee him being matched up with everyone in Elite, including Cabbage and Bigfoot.

  4. Well put it this way all the best fighters are in the UFC and in Japan so anything else is lower class talent so no matter what Kimbo will never prove himself cause he wont fight top level talent but true that will be somewhat of step up for him, but i dont know much about Nelson, he looks to be in very bad shape so i dont know if the credibility is good there either.

  5. Nelson just has a good chin and heavy hands. I don't like the heavyweights in the IFL so I don't really know how good he is.

Elite cross promotes with everyone and I wouldn't be suprised if they can cross with Affliction. That would mean Fedor, Sylvia, Alexander Emelianenko, and Arlovski. Those seem like good heavyweights to me. Theres also Barnett and the Snowman but I'm not sure where they are fighting right now.

  6. tim what are you talking about the best h.w. fighters are not in the ufc or in japan, go look at the affliction card theres most of the best h.w.'s in the world right there.big country is good and almost a top ten h.w. and could beat most of the ufc h.w's except for maybe 3 of them.

  7. I seriously doubt that, the guy is out of shape and would not last a serious 3 5minute round fight or the championship 5 round 5 minute fights, the longest he has ever gone is 3 round 4minutes each. from what i can tell he just has a good chin but put him in there with a overall MMA fighter like Fedor or Mir or Herring or even Lesnar for that matter and they will all put up a great fight and probably beat him withing an inch of his life. He has fought nobodys just up and coming fighters. And yes the best fighters are in the UFC look at GSP, Penn, etc…why does everyone want to fight in the UFC because of the money, somewhat but because that is where the top fighters are and where they will gain the most recognition. Seriously put anyone out there including Fedor in with the Top fighters in the UFC and i bet you that the UFCfighter would give him all he has got and could very well win. Fedor is way overrated he is good but everyone can be beaten. So back to Kimbo and Nelson, there is no real competion anywhere else but the UFC or Japan. look some guys come into the UFC with like 30-0 records etc, good records but they get beat up within 3 fights in the UFC and get cut. i am not talking about all but most fighters. It doesnt really matter what my 2 sense is anyways.

  8. you have no idea of what your talking about tim, i am sure you are young and new to the sport and are in love with the ufc but like i said the ufc h.w. devision is weak ask anyone look any where and they will say the same thing. go to any h.w. rankings at any site.also despite his look roy nelson has good cardio and can go the distance and would beat alot of the ufc h.w's. you say fedor would lose toany of the top ufc h.w.s and thats just stupid he already beat the ufc champ 3 times and would beat any hw that the ufc has. than you bring up pay look at what tim is making fighting fedor compared to what he made in the ufc. please look these things up.

  9. also you bring up kimbo and nelson and say the only comp is in ufc or japan?there no great h.w.'s in japan so once again go look at the affliction for the best h.w.'s out there.

  10. I have and i dont know what Tim is making to fight Fedor but he had a contract guartee in UFC of 250K just to fight and 100K to win. thats not bad and just to let you know the UFC is only big name MMA org that is not in over their heads and the UFC is Debt Free and has a subtantial amount of money in reserve for marketing, fighter pay etc…example elite XC is growing but they havent made a good profit in over 2years and they need big paydays EliteXC is a desperate promotion that’s hemorrhaging money. It’s willing to sell anything, even a false portrait of its sport, to succeed and that is pathetic. Example this weekend is suppost to be the most important card in the history of the sport, wouldn’t it be nice if it actually had some of the best fighters and best representatives of mixed martial arts? Anderson Silva, B.J. Penn and Georges St. Pierre display what MMA is all about and they are in the UFC, Not menacing scowls but unreal athletic ability, disciplined training and tremendous intelligence from fighters as multi-skilled as they are fearless. The UFC has run the sport understanding that its popularity could be greater than the sum of its parts. EliteXC, especially with its biggest star, appears to be eschewing investment in the long term. Earlier this year the UFC welcomed former WWE and amateur wrestling star Brock Lesnar, who, in some ways, could be called its Kimbo. Lesnar, a former NCAA wrestling champ, is far more skilled, that isn’t the comparison here thats just obvious. The similarity is that Lesnar arrived with great fanfare and curiosity. Everyone wanted to see what he could really do. The old way of thinking, the boxing way, would be to match him up against an overwhelmed opponent and cash in on some easy victories as he was brought along slowly. UFC president Dana White, however, stuck to his league’s core belief that you either prove yourself or you go home. There are no padded records or kid glove scheduling in the UFC. If Lesnar was for real, he would have to prove it. If not, see ya. It’s what fight fans covet. It’s why the UFC has thrived. In February, White matched Lesnar up against the kind of fighter that could beat him, Frank Mir, an experienced former heavy weight champion and submission expert. The fight was thrilling, Lesnar almost knocked out Mir until Mir’s superior skill earned him a submission.Lesnar lost. His second fight, against dangerous Heath Herring in August, could leave him 0-2 in the UFC and facing an unsure future. That’s the deal with the UFC. It’s real. So real, White is willing to run one of his biggest stars right out of the game. Kimbo hasn’t fought anyone nearly as good as Mir or Herring. Who knows if he ever will? EliteXC and CBS are running his career like a boxer, even if trumped up records and mismatch fights have severely damaged that sports’ popularity. Simply Put the only true MMA Org out there is the UFC which has the Top talent in the Nation and stick true to what MMA is all aboutfight the best of the best or go home to the losers ORG, as in Elite XC. some the above is based upon recent articles.

  11. I agree that Affliction has the best Heavyweights right now. But the UFC does have some good prospects like Lesnar and Kongo. Nelson is a good step up for Kimbo.

  12. I agree with you Tim on Penn, GSP, and Silva. They are out of this world. But at the same time the UFC doesn't own all of the talent in the world. There are other great fighters like Calvacante, Aoki, Gilbert Melendez, Gomi, Alvarez, Nick Diaz, and a ton more. I like watching those guys fight as much as the UFC fighters.

  13. tim is making alot more fighting for affliction 600 or 800 thousand for 1 fight. i agree with you on lesnar they are giving him real fights and i respect him for that but kimbo is going probally the right route fighting his way up even though it does not make the fans happy and he is over hyped but thats the promoters job and they have promoted him better than any mma fighter in the history of the sport he been on the covers of mags and cmt awards, i agree he has not earned that and could easily be a flop when he faces some one tough but i can't blame him for that. the only thimg i am saying is the ufc h.w. devsion is weak and roy nelson is some top comp for kimbo to face amd fedor would beat any ufc h.w.

  14. i agree too in other devsion the ufc is the best and has most of the best guys but like onri said there is alot of talent outside of the ufc, just the h.w. devison is weak.

  15. Well Yes to a certain extent, and that is why they brought in Lesnar to pick up the division, Now Marketing how can you say that Kimbo has been marketed more than any other fighter? Um Was not Lesnar in the WWE and that is marketing in its self the premiere experts of marketing and how to market someone. He was also onthe cover of Muscle and Fitenss, etc.. i believe Lesnar has had the most ever exposure of any MMA fighter in the World simply because he was the main event for WWE in front of Millions and Millions of people for 4 plus years and his exposure leads the UFC to just say his name on there website which will draw curious WWE fans and MMA fans to see him fight. So i do not agree with you on that Kimbo is the most marketing and exposed fighter ever. Lesnar is for sure and will always be simply because of his past accomplishments and great exposure.

  16. I think everyone wants to see both Kimbo and Lesnar fight. Kimbos marketing comes from the fact that everyone has such a strong opinion of him. Seems like mostly hate. But I look at the comment boards and polls on these mma sites and Kimbo has the most comments in all by far. So I don't know if Kimbo is the most marketed fighter by the org, but he is definitely the most marketed fighter by the fans and their word of mouth.

  17. dane drebin says:

kimbo has no chance against lesnar plain and simple i dont understand why people think it would be a good fight. big country is a step up for kimbo for sure but he would never be a champ in the ufc EVER

  18. i am not saying they should fight or that kimbo is a great fighter but he has been promoted more than any fighter, magazine covers cmt awards comericials and nelson is a huge step up for him. do i think nelson or kimbo would ever be champ in the ufc, no but neither will most of the fighters in the ufc.do i think nelson has potential yes kimbo i have alot of douts but i would like to see.

  19. yeah kimbo has gotten a ton of press the last month. i think the only fighter that gets marketed more is chuck liddell. hes everywhere and now has his own supplement package. maybe kimbo can do the same thing next and try to sell a kimbo chest shaver.

  20. hows about we all just stfu about kimbi ferguson. im sick of hearing peoples opinions about a name because he is more of a name than a fighter.

  21. dane drebin says:

    agreed

  22. you know, i think making kimbo-thompson the main event is bad for MMA. hear me out. kenny florian was talking about this on MMA Live. he said the main event shold really be lawler-scott smith. both have been with MMA for a long time, and lawler is known — especially since hs's fought in the UFC before and is affiliated with hughes's gym. lawler is the champ in that division.

  23. dane drebin says:

yeah its definetly a skao in the face to all the veterans

  24. dane drebin says:

    slap* lol

  25. i think they want to close the show with a spectacle fight. the one that everyone will be talking about after it happens. to the average viewer there is nothing more entertaining than watching big heavyweights throwing blows and one getting KO'd.
