“JZ” Calvancante Out 3-4 Months With Torn ACL

By CagE | May 13, 2008

According to Sherdog, lightweight Gesias “JZ” Calvancante will be sidelined 3-4 months after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during his fight with submission specialist Shinya Aoki on April 29.

The American Top Team fighter has won the K-1 Hero’s lightweight grand prix twice and was the favorite to win the DREAM Lightweight grand prix.

“I kept doing the same game…I didn’t change. The emotion took control, so I couldn’t change in the fight. I wasn’t that smart.”

“When I got to the airport, they came behind us and asked…It [the next fight] was really close timing and the knee injury I’d had for a long time.”

ROY you are right ACL takes 8 months or more after surgery. If this was to be healed in 3 months it must be a very small tear.

it dosn’t matter the size, its either torn or a partial tear and if its surgery its the same pocedure and that will take no less than 8 months to rehab.

thats bad news guys because i like watching jz fight. i think you all are right though because the initial report was that he would not fight in 2008. that seems more like he will be rehabing for more than 3-4 months. i wonder when he hurt himself during that fight because he didn’t look like his normal self.

He can be back sooner than 8 months. I completely tore my ACL and was back sparring in 6 months. The doctor gave me the option of using the middle third of my patteler tendon or using a cadaver tendon…I chose my tendon even though it meant a longer recovery and a 6 inch scar on my knee. Given that I was not fighting MMA (Sport BJJ) and the competition was not at the same level, but I am not a professional athlete and was only able to do my physical therapy. He is already in great shape and will be able to workout his upper bady and core section sometime during the day and do his PT at another time.
