Just A Road Block, Or The Death Of EliteXC

It took only seconds for a short, choppy right hand to drop Kimbo Slice, which may have also delivered the crippling blow to the entire Elite XC organization.

Kimbo built his legend bullying smaller and less imposing opposition. On Saturday night, the same type of challenger humbled Slice. Giving up 30 pounds and two inches, Seth Petruzelli buried the momentous hype that was Kimbo Slice.

Ken Shamrock was handpicked to showcase Kimbo’s talent. He was the perfect opponent for Kimbo to display his highly touted knockout power. From a fighting standpoint, the fight was a very favorable match up for Kimbo. Shamrock had lost seven of his previous eight fights and hadn’t won since 2004. Still, he was a marquee name in the sport and would have been the perfect opponent marketing wise. That was before the main event got called off, leaving Elite XC officials in a dire situation.

A freak cut brow, suffered on his final night of training, preventing Shamrock from appearing against Kimbo. Instead, an experienced journeyman known only for his previous stint on the Ultimate Fighter and subsequent UFC losses took a gigantic slice out of Kimbo’s legendary status.

Elite XC initially started as a promising mixed martial arts organization. Unfortunately, they have slowly deteriorated, becoming a fledgling, circus like promotion. Instead of diversifying their talent pool to include several elite fighters, Elite XC built their product around a raw prospect in Kimbo. But, banking solely on an MMA novice in such an unpredictable sport is a dangerous gamble. And, the loss to Petruzelli is a deflating blow to the organization’s biggest star and leaves them starving for ratings and in desperate need of another famous face.

The promotion does have several other talented fighters in its stable. Jake Shields, Robbie Lawler, Antonio Silva and even Nick Diaz are all quality fighters. The problem is they simply do not have enough drawing power to carry an organization.

Jake Shields retained his title after fighting a very game and tough Paul Daley. The challenger fought admirably, but Shields battled back en route to winning a dominating, albeit hard earned, submission victory. Shields, is just not an awe-inspiring fighter and most of his bouts take place on the ground.

Gina Carano, the organization’s next biggest star, looked solid in her victory. The face of women’s MMA always provides entertaining bouts. Except, women’s MMA is not yet significant enough to save a drowning company. Ultimately, Kimbo was the key to their success or failure.

Truth is, it was only a matter of time before Kimbo was exposed. After all, he was very inexperienced as an MMA fighter and was already 34-years-old.

Still, Elite XC had gone to great lengths in order to choose Kimbo’s opponents carefully. They anticipated that by the time he was exposed, the organization would have been able to milk the most money and notoriety out of the Internet sensation.

Kimbo was supposed to be their cash cow, yet it took only 14-seconds to bring those expectations to a grinding halt, potentially derailing Elite XC in the process.

  1. i loved seth in TUF 2 he was great and i am happy he won..i think elite will be ok and now kimbo should lose some hype but still be in the main card but not the main show..

  2. its hard to tell but i think that the best thing about elite is that they partnered with affliction for this show. so if they fold i don't think it will come soon as long as they continue to copromote. its too bad tito cant fight for 6 months because they definitely need a new name to draw people in.

  3. Then Tito could fight some bums so EliteXC could say he's still a top fighter!

  4. If they want to market some ghetto thug as their poster boy for MMA ….. Then they get what they they deserve. This shit has been a circus since day one. Reminds me of the XFL with all the gimmicks. Good fucking riddance.

  5. I agree with Jake, fuck em!

  6. PooPooPlatter says:

EliteXC has been good for the fans of MMA. We might not all agree with the way they've run their business, but that's another argument.

Any and all competition for the UFC is good. It makes the UFC try harder and forces them to air free shows from time to time.

  7. also seth dropped bob sapp with the same front kick then left cross and down went kimbo and Bob..

  8. Nate Fury says:

I have to admitt I got caught up in the myth of Kimbo Slice and was fooled into thinking he was an unstoppable force in MMA. I was also looking forward to him knocking out Shamrock, untill a witnessed a side of Kimbo that I have seen in other top stars that got to big for their britches. He showed his true colors, when he turned his back on the UFC Hall of Famer and refused to touch gloves with Seth P.. He showed no class and he paid dearly for it and im glad. It's the best thing that can happen to a fighter that gets caught up in their own hype. Kimbo needed knocked down a few notches and he was. The same has happened to guys like Chuck Liddell and GSP. I also predict it will happen to Anderson Silva.

    Nate Fury

  9. Anyone is beatable but some are just better at not letting that happen…i dont Think Silva will be beat the rest of this year….he just is too good and he is on a roll..i do think he will lose at least 1 in his next 8 matches. now for the loser we all new exept those misbelievers of the Kimbo is simply nothing but ta bum…and it showed this weekend he got schoold, KTFO, sent packing…he got hit so bad his kids felt it…..man i serioulsy hope this man never fights again as this proves the talent level in the UFC…an ex UFC fighter with an 0-2 record in the UFC comes out and demolishes the hype and glory of Kimbo is 14 seconds….Elite XC is done and i hope they go away although i did like watching MMA on National Free TV but it wont matter for me

  10. many people were scarred to strike with chuck until Rampage dropped him an tko'd him for the second time and then Jardine stepped up and said hey im gonna outstrike this guy and now chuck isnt the same as has been losing all b/c people arent scarred of him anymore. Same will happen with Anderson or maybe A. Silva will always be as dominate as he is now but like everyone besdes fedor everyone loses.

  11. Not to mention Chuck is 1 dimensional now Kimbo will keep fighting b/c he likes to fight. He will also want to improve like everyone else and he will get better. Im not sure how much better but still better.

  12. i can understand people being happy about kimbo losing but why do you want elite to fold? there not that great of a company but that show was pretty good and any free mma is good to me, i am happy kimbo lost cause now elite and kimbo can move on and thats see where they go next.

  13. I see your point but from a pure MMA business stand point the way they are trying to succeed is ridiculous and an insult to MMA fighters and watchers everywhere. The created such a hype over this washed up bum from the streets fighter name Kimbo and seriously hand fed opponents he would crush in order to build him a rep and for ratings..sure it worked but they way they did it wont last now and cant so they will likely fold as no one wants to see Kimbo fight again as he is no fun to watch…i only watched in hopes he would get his ass kicked and finally he did…Elite XC wether we like or not is over 60million in the whole and unless they get a partnership willing to absorb those lossses and come together and unite with another pomotion they will not last as the market isnt there anymore for there roster.

  14. the ufc does the same thing, do they use a ranking system so that the highest ranked and most deserving fighters get there shot? no they put matches together based on ratings only. the ufc is not a sport its sports entertainment, elite has alot of good fighters and thats who they should have been markecting and now maybe they will, i am not a big fan of theres but i will watch all the free mma i can get at any level.

  15. Oswald Gobblecock says:

Roy, it's not that we want EliteXC to drop off. I just want them to stop treating fans like we're stupid by saying shit like Seth beating Kimbo was the greatest upset in MMA history! I can't respect a company that lies like that or keep on annoucers that lie like this. I know they're trying to sell themselves but do it with some respect. I'm glad Kimbo lost because we'll knew he isn't a good MMA fighter and maybe now they'll stop putting him as the headliner when he didn't deserve to be there in the first place. I hope ELiteXC and Kimbo stick around but not if they're gonna lie like that!

  16. Everybody knows that EliteXC protected Kimbo and hand picked his opponents to enhance his record and drive ratings. Everybody knows the UFC does the exact same thing only at a higher level. roy has it nailed. These are both sports entertainment organizations and will do anything to increase revenue whether or not to true mma fans agree with it or not. They will protect their brands. That is why I hope independent titles like the WAMMA belts have some impact on the matchmakers down the road. Maybe one day we'll see organizations forced into co promoting to make money instead of keeping their talent locked away. Kimbo's loss is a blow but many fans are interested to see how he responds to this in his next fight and that should still draw ratings.

  17. oswald and fedor24 i completely agree, tim you say you watched it than you didn't it was a good show and it was good to see kimbo lose you should have checked it out replays don't have the same feeling.

  18. The fact that Kimbo Lost is the best thing that could have happened , true MMA fans know that he was just a puppet brought in to increase ratings for EliteXC , But had no mma background . anyone cheering for him must be new to the sport or obviously not follow it , i really hope that this Organization Folds quickly . it has bought viewers a bad example of what a top level Organization should be.

  19. Great article.

  20. I dont hink i did but i did check out the you tube replays late saturday when i got home…. anyways as Andre just stated and i totally agree with you on it…

  21. Yeah Andre you said it pretty good. The only reason I would want Elite to fold is if they keep doing this shit with guys like Kimbo. I have to disagree about UFC though. I actually don't think they match fights off ratings, because there are a lot more combinations they could do. Also, most of the times, these fighters aren't known like Kimbo is. Sure, some of them have been in movies, but that has only been pretty recently. I kind of think, reguardless of how much I don't really like him, Dana White looks at it from a fighting standpoint. He looks at it thinking, "Who is the next contender, and who would make a good fight." I am not going to say that some of it isn't for marketing. The fact that you have to pay for most UFC filters out some of the fake fans that look for those Kimbo-type fighters.

  22. Brock Lesnar could argueably be considered as one of the "ratings" fighters. He is kind of a gray area in that subject, but at least he has talent and isn't fighting nobody's

  23. Like I have been writing in the past, Kimbo was a joke. Shamrock would have exposed him. Kimbo was that bad. Now they can go back to doing You Tube videos behind the Jack In The Box of Kimbo beating up bums. And when I say bums I mean acctual bums not washed up or crappy fighters. Kimbo was a glorified bum and his 10 minutes is over.

  24. i don't want elite to fold. even if you only support the ufc, competiton will make the ufc better. i don't think it got much attention but the ShoXC a couple of weeks ago was the shit. the only thing it was missing was big names but the whole show was good.

  25. Exactly i just couldnt find the words to say it…show the fans some respect…your dont se the UFC or een Affliction disrespecting their vewiers as they promote logical and ethical fights…meaning they dont put tomato cans to fight top level talent..they match up fights based upon Rankings, Skill set and the ablility of each fighter to excell in the fight..they put on good fights..hell we all knew pretty much how Kimbo was going to win and it wasnt even a fight…sure this loss is embarrasing becasuse Elite XC was trying to find someone that could not beat Kimbo and look what ended up happening…so i have no respect for Elite XC and if they go down who the Fuck cares…but as you said i dont mind watching free MMA but i am not going to stay home on a saturday night to watch this crap..i will catch the replays hell i didnt even see this past weekends fights i just heard about it. Free MMA sure but it must be quality fights and they do have some but they wont last…they are negative 60 plus million….

  26. Oswald Gobblecock says:

I want EliteXC to stay around cause it makes UFC give us better cards and even free ones. I just want Elite to back real fighters and put people in main events that deserve it. They have to stop lying also about Kimbo getting beat was a huge upset cause it wasn't. Keep Kimbo as a fighter but they should stop making him fight in the main event and promote better fighters.
