Jamie Varner To Be Stripped Of WEC Title, Serious Injuries Might Force Retirement

By CagE | June 30, 2009

Bad News for the WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner,

The WEC plans to strip the lightweight title shortly from Jamie Varner, who won a fight by split decision in the fifth round in January against Cerrone. The fight had to be stopped after Cerrone hit Varner in the head with his knee in an illegal move.

During that fight, Varner broke a hand and a foot, and may never fight again, Harris said.

Donald Cerrone and Ben Henderson will likely fight for the Varners title on September 2, at Covelli Centre in Youngstown, Ohio.

UPDATE
Varnar denies all rumors of retirement. The WEC will create a intrem belt while the WEC lightweight champion heals up.
