Instant Replay and Non-Title 5 Round Fights Approved In Nevada

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) approve some ground breaking new rule changes on Wednesday. The first being “Instant Replay”,

“A referee at the conclusion of a contest or exhibition stopped immediately due to an injury to an unarmed combatant pursuant to NAC 467.718 and after making a decision, may view a replay if available in order to determine whether the injury in question was caused a legal blow or a foul.”[MMAWeekly]

Also the commission approved non-championship fights the ability to go five rounds. This opens the door for big name non-title superfights which until this ruling were limited to three rounds.

The commission also passed a regulation that allows for five-round non-title bouts in MMA between two athletes, as long as, of course, they are of championship caliber, according to Executive Director Keith Kizer.

Although this ruling is great for the sport, it clearly gives the commission the ability to pick and choose which fights are “Championship Caliber”. Is Cro Cop vs Dos Santos championship caliber? Who knows, we’ll to see how flexible the commission decides to be in this issue.

These ruling go into effect in 30 days.

  1. thats great news! so many early stoppages and 3 round fights i would have liked to have seen go 5. this will only make mma better for spectators..

  2. actually i read that wrong.. the instant replays are to determine if it was a legal or foul.. would have liked if it really meant over turn a tko or ko if there really wasn't one for all those questionable stoppages.. ehh

  3. this is awesome for a few fights we have seen go to decision that will likely be finished now, you know if chuck and wand went two more rounds someone was getting KO'd

  4. seems kinda lame to use insta replays in a sport like MMA, where the difference between a legal and illegal strike can mean the loss or win of a fight.

(by which i mean if they stop the fight to check whether or not it was a legal shot/move that could have finished the fight, but instead the fighter gets to recover)

of course it will have its advantages….. but disadvantages too.

  5. oh and the round count should be based on the quality of the fight….

some fights i just can't urge enough to hurry up and finish.
