Fedor Wants Werdum Rematch, Strikeforce Should Listen

As much as I like Fedor as a fighter, I feel for any promotion that has to deal with his management team. In a recent interview with a Russian magazine , Fedors manager and confidant Vadim Finkelstein discusses whats next for the Russian heavyweight.

We are ready to fight against anyone, but everyone agrees that the most interesting fight right now is the rematch against Fabricio Werdum. We have one fight left on our contract, so if Strikeforce want to extend it — they should listen to our opinion. Fedor will fight again sometime between October and November. I’ll repeat that again: the only thing fans want to see is Fedor vs Werdum II. Fabricio himself said that he would like to rematch Fedor in Russia. It’s great, but this fight will not happen in Russia. [Translated via LowKick]

Sound to me like they just want to avenge the loss to Werdum, so Fedor can walk off into the sunset with an unblemished record.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has other plans, expressing his desire for Fedor to finish his contract against the champion Alistair Overeem.

“My feeling is maybe Fedor should fight Alistair Overeem and whoever wins that fight gets to fight Fabricio Werdum. I would love to see that fight too, Alistair and Fedor, I would love to see that fight happen. Here’s the thing, we just saw Fedor fight Werdum; I’m not saying we couldn’t do the rematch [Fedor vs. Werdum] first but I’m saying there are a couple options on the table. Until we sit down with M-1, we’re just talking about different options and that [Fedor vs. Overeem] is one of the options.” [Sherdog]

  1. i would like to see him fight overeem but i don't understand why all the sudden they treat werdum like hes the champ cause he beat fedor, why should fedor get the shot first and then werdum have to get the winner, it makes no sense other than to cash in on fedors (presumably) last fight, maybe ever? or at least against a relivant opponent in the states.

  2. Well said Coker!

Don't let those punks push you around.

    "Strikeforce Should Listen"?

Fuck that, they're already bending over backwards for this guy, now more demands?

If SF want him to sign for more fights, then that is an excellent bargaining chip.

  4. AFRAIDOR MILLIONERKO says:

I say they have the upper hand in negotiations now. Fedor refuses to sign for more fights…make his next fight Overeem, another loss for fedor, and send him on his way…pretty sure ending his career on a two fight losing streak. Only grant him the automatic rematch if he agrees to sign on for more fights. Then and only then, allowing him a shot at retribution. With that undefeated mystique gone, no danger in losing him to Zuffa.

  5. Aldo Raine says:

How is Fedor even in the running right now for a title shot against Overeem. Werdum fought Fedor…..they were most likely the number 1 and 2 contenders in strikeforce…..Werdum was the better fighter. How shouldn't Werdum get a title shot. I would think M-1 would lose their control over Strikeforce with the Fedor loss. Fedor's not the number 1 heavyweight anymore and he never will be again. I would like to see Overeem fight Fedor to see Fedor get his ass kicked. Hopefully then he'd retire and we wouldn't have to see him or M-1 trying to hand pick what fights they want. M-1 is the Don King of MMA.

  6. Rampage says:

Of course your right from a logical standpoint, but that leauge can't survive on logic. The fights have to be soley based on what the fans want to see and let's face it, there are only 3 serious HW's in the entire orgaization. Werdum deserves a shot at Overeem, but it will go to Fedor nonetheless.

    Word?

  7. Kung Fu Panda says:

Aldo, first you say that "how could fedor be in the running for a tittle shot against Overeem" and then you say that you would like to see "Overeem fight Fedor"

  8. Aldo Raine, Then why does BJ penn a guy with 5 losses get a instant rematch with Frankie edgar. Total BS right? Fedor loses one time and of a sudden he is a nobody and werdum is God. CMON! look at the records and they speak for themselves. Who has been the most consistent fighter huh FEDOR! GSP lost against Serra and it was a fluke, give me break GSP nuthuggers. Fedor is still the Man and nobody can do what he has done

  9. Why does BJ Penn get an instant rematch??? Simple, he can sell the fight. You can't really sell Edgar vs. Maynard.

  10. M-1 wants a rematch to scratch that loss to Werdum. It's all about marketing. If Fedor beats Werdum, then the next fight has to be against Overeem and guess what? Contract time!

  11. Rampage says:

    Why?

    That makes no sense.

Strikeforce now holds the cards. Fedor and M-1 are desperate to rematch Werdum and for the sake of his legacy want a win against him.

If Strikeforce makes the next fight for Fedor against Overeem, then the chances go way up that M-1 will extend the Fedor contract with Strikeforce to force a Werdum rematch.

Scott Coker is not stupid, if he lets M-1 push him around, there is no guarantee that they will extend their contract beyond the next Werdum bout.

What do fans want to see?

What they have wanted from Strikeforce for the entire 3 fight contract:

    "Fedor vs Overeem"
