EliteXC News: Shamrock Out, Petruzelli In To Fight Kimbo

By CagE | October 4, 2008

MMA heavyweight Ken Shamrock has been declared medically ineligible to compete in tonight’s CBS EliteXC Saturday Night Fights co-main event against Kimbo Slice. Shamrock sustained a cut to the area above his left eye during a training session earlier today.

“It appears that he was warming up as he stated, rolling over and received a head butt, which resulted in a laceration over his eye,” stated Dr. Alan Fields of the Florida State Athletic Commission in an interview with cageside reporter Karyn Bryant. “He received 6 sutures in the eyebrow. He explained that he wanted to fight, however for his safety, we have rules. Anyone with a recent laceration cannot go participate in a fight.”

Heavyweight Seth Petruzelli, of Ft. Meyers, Fla., originally slated to fight Aaron Rosa on the non-televised undercard, has stepped in to replace the injured Shamrock in the CBS co-main event. Petruzelli was offered the fight against Slice just hours before the broadcast was set to begin, and immediately accepted.

Slice, while disappointed that Shamrock can not compete, also accepted the Petruzelli fight immediately.

Petruzelli, a former UFC light heavyweight and US karate champion, stands at 6’ 0”, and weighed in officially on Friday for his fight with Rosa at 205 ½ pounds. His record is 10 wins, 4 losses. Petruzelli trains with American Top Team, widely considered to be one of the best MMA training franchises in the country.

wtf. nice one elitexc to have shamrock mysteriously get cut after weigh ins and on the day of the fight. i don’t think i’ve EVER heard of such bullshit for the main event, where one of the fighters get cut or injured within hours of the event.

Kimbo lost in 12 sec 1st round! lol Told you they’d say it was an upset!

Wow I told my buddy that seth has a great chance to beat him and wow he did kimbo needed this to realize that he can be hurt and that just like chuck he has to respect his opponents stand up at all times.

I still dont think kimbo is done. He will be back everyone has to learn and if u have fought before u know that u learn from your mistakes.

derek…elite xc didn’t make the decision.

Nice, though, giving Seth the winner 4 seconds to enjoy it in front of the mic and then letting Kimbo run his mouth. I for one didn’t need to hear that Kimbo was alright with the results.

nichole…nothing happens on that card that elitexc doesn’t sanction. seth beating kimbo really hurts kimbo’s brand. it gives elitexc one less money draw. it will have been a bad night with big ratings.

Fact is they’re calling this an unset and a shock when it’s not! Kimbo finally fought some1 who isn’t a bum. Seth is a decent fighter at best but not a bum. This just shows what MMA fans already knew and lots of casual fans didn’t which is Kimbo is nothing special!

  15. Nichole Lesniak Says:

The Florida Athletic Commission decides who fights and who doesn’t, not Elite XC. Elite XC didn’t have a choice over whether or not Shamrock could fight.

man i never herd such a bigger lie on tv than ken’s excuse about his cut, lol how could any body believe that story, who knows who is responsible for him really having that cut, maybe the UFC paid it off so kimbo could go up against somebody more likely to beat him, huh huh lol. but us regular ppl will never know the truth. but im extremely happy kimbo got knocked, but why are they giving Seth so much credit for beating kimbo, lmao kimbo aint shit.

holyshit kimbo dropped the ball…. the whole card was awesome and then Bang their cash train gets derailed. sucks i was kind of hoping elite xc would survive but i dont know if they can when kimbos losing to nobody light heavy weights with pink hair and tramp stamps

  19. steve Says:
    October 4th, 2008 at 11:53 pm

EliteXc still has talented fighters. They just have to promote them right to survive. PROMOTION is key.

  20. YC Says:
    October 5th, 2008 at 12:15 am

its hard to promote no name fighters, elite planned on Kimbo being their money train but he just got loved tapped and dropped to mat by some no name, elite should of canceled Kimbo for the night and moved the two under cards below him to make the main events, bad move for elite. Again KIMBO SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!
