Busted: Cris “Cyborg” Santos Tests Positive for Steroids [Updated]

Women’s MMA took a major blow today as the best female fighter in the world, Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Santos, had her drug test come back positive for a controlled substance. The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) released their findings today and have fined her $2,500 and suspended her license.

This is a huge disappointment since she is the reigning Strikeforce women’s 145 lb. champion and has looked unstoppable lately. In her last fight at Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal on December 16th, she had an impressive 16-second knockout win over Hiroko Yamanaka. That win has now been overturned by the CSAC as a “no contest” decision.

Here is the CSAC press release on the matter:

The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has suspended the license of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Cristiane Justino Santos, better known in MMA circles as Cris Cyborg, and has fined her $2,500 as the result of a positive test for a banned substance.

Santos’ December 16, 2011 drug test came back positive for stanozolol metabolites. CSAC learned of the test results December 23, 2011 and suspended Santos’s license, with the suspension applied retroactively to December 16, 2011. In accordance with Rule 368, the result of her last fight between Hiroko Yamanaka will be changed to a “No Decision”.

“Our primary concern is for the health and safety of fighters,” said CSAC Executive Officer George Dodd. “Anabolic agents and other banned substances put not only the users of those agents at risk, but their opponents as well. The commission simply will not tolerate their use.”

UPDATE
UFC President Dana White discussed stripping the title from Cyborg with ESPN and possibly killing the women’s 145 lb division.

“We were going to hold that division and just do fights with Cyborg whenever there was a new contender. She’s getting stripped of the title. This pretty much kills the division. I don’t know. We’ll see what happens.”

    Wow

  2. Ron Pauly says:

Not to surprised with her voice sounding all manly. Tate v. Ronda for the title?

  3. Her arms are bigger than any of the 145 lb men that are in MMA. Shocker!! Lol. Her metabolism must have slowed down for it to still be in her system at the fight.

  4. I think we all knew it but it's still sad anyway. Sets the women's division back a lot now.

  5. Sad if it's true but I'll wait for the B test. A lot of folks jumped to conclusions with Diana Turasai.

  6. Ron Pauly says:

I agree all the ladies are going to get hit by this one. One good thing, it opens up the 145 division again, all those good fighters that Cyborg destroyed can now comeback and populate it.
