Big John McCarthy Making Sense of July 29th UFC-Affliction Mess

big john mccarthy

Big John McCarthy comment’s to the OC Register on the UFC-Affliction Mess.

“I mean, look at that fight. You got your middleweight champion (Anderson Silva), you’re moving up to light-heavyweight to fight James Irvin. What good does that do for him? I mean, (UFC president) Dana (White) feels … obviously he feels there is some competition there with Affliction. He wants to try to do something to damage Affliction. That’s why he is doing this. I look at it and it’s bad for the sport, it’s bad for the fans. There needs to be more than the one promotion.”

“The UFC is the big one on the block. I would never say anything differently until anything really comes about. But to sit there and try to shove a show in on the same date to say come watch. It’s the same thing they did with the Chuck Liddell special (on Spike TV) the same night as the (EliteXC) fights on CBS. It’s like, come on. The sport is big enough to where there can be more than one. There needs to be more than one. The UFC has what 200 fighters signed or 250 fighters? You know what, there are a whole lot more fighters thana that in this world and they need jobs. So there needs to be the other promotions.”

“Thank God, Affliction is doing what they are doing and putting together … honestly, I’m not saying it to say it, it is the best card with heavyweights that has ever been put together by any organization in, at least North America, and probably in the world ever. You’ve got three ex-UFC champions (Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett and Andre Arlovski). You’ve got the ex-PRIDE champion in Fedor (Emelianenko) and you have other guys. You have Matt Lindland, Vitor Belfort, Mike Whitehead against Renato ‘Babalu’ (Sobral). You’ve got some great fights there. It’s going to be a hell of a card. Go and watch the one live and TiVo the UFC show. That’s what I’m going to do. I will TiVo the UFC show.”

  1. john s right

  2. Scooby Doo says:

    Thank you, John well said.

  3. lawdogk says:

John fuck off! If you owned the UFC you would do the same thing. Smart buisness. You are now biting the hand that feed you for so long.Wow what a traitor you are.

  4. John I agree with you totaly. The MMA world needs another big promotion to build up more rivalries. The MMA world was better when PRIDE was still in business.

  5. john did not work for the ufc, but he is totally right.

  6. I agree the sport is big enough for more than just UFC. Just cant figure out why Big John would be the one saying this when he is employed by the UFC. Not a smart move on his part to publicly bad mouth your bosses business decisions.

  7. he is not employed by the ufc refs are not employed by the promoters and he works for hdnet now.

  8. Nichole Lesniak says:

Roy…you are correct. Refs (while working) are employed by the Athletic Commission.

  9. lawdogk says:

In the beginning…Big John was employed by the UFC. No commision existed at that time. So originaly yes he was an employee.

  10. i am sure that may be true lawdogk but its was probally before the current owners.

  11. Ok…There's Burger King and McDonald's, right? They both co-exist, right? McDonald's does whatever it can to take business away from Burger King and vice versa, right? So, what's the problem???

  12. Ok…There’s Burger King and McDonald’s, right? They both co-exist, right? McDonald’s does whatever it can to take business away from Burger King and vice versa, right? So, what’s the problem???

    Everyone still eats, right?

  13. i don't think theres a problem with it, he just said it was bad for the sport not bad for the ufc.

  14. I'm all for the competition as long as it doesn't get out of hand. As long as the best talent doesn't get spread out. But I think 3 or 4 good promotions worldwide would be great for the sport. In business, competition makes you evolve faster. The UFC will get even better with a little competition.

  15. Think of it in a sporting sense….baseball for example. There are the minor leagues (farm organizations) used to scout and develope new talent and there are the major leagues….both the National and American Leagues. Does anyone complain that there are 5 games on at the same given time???? No, it gives us choices and allows us to follow who we identify or root for! As I have stated before, Dana has pissed in his cheerios by attempting to be a dictator rather than a president! Love to see that any other card (good or bad as it may be) is a cause to get his feathers ruffled!

Agreee totally with Big John……PPV will be bought for Affliction and Tivo will be set for UFC on Spike!

  16. I think Big John is not againts anybody here. He is speaking in his own point of view and he makes a lot of sense. I think saying this only proved his loyalty to the sport. Obviously Dana wants to hurt Affliction. Spider is a PPV main event class fighter and to give it away for free is fishy. For me, let the sport grow. More promotion is good for the sport and the fans
