UFC News: Sherk To Fight Winner Of Penn vs. Stevenson

sean sherk stripped

Today UFC.com has officially announced that the fight between BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson will be for the UFC lightweight title, stripping Sherk of his title. Dana White also stated that Sherk will be first in line for a title shot with the winner.

“I have nothing but respect for Sean Sherk and I believe he’s been honest throughout this whole process,” said UFC President Dana White. “But BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson will be fighting for the lightweight title at UFC 80 on January 19th and Sean Sherk will fight the winner for the title.”

Sean Sherk tested positive for steroids after his fight with Hermes Franca at UFC 73. Earlier this month the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) upheld their ruling, but reduced Sherks suspension from one year to six months, making Sherk eligible to fight in late January 2008.

I'm still pissed, he didn't get any punishment at all other than having to wait one fight. He is eligible in January…then let him fight someone in January for a title shot. Winner faces the winner of Penn/Stevenson.

  2. tom says:

no way.. he lost the belt and alot of money.. im happy that he gets to fight the winner.

  3. dane drebin says:

he should fight the loser hahaha

  4. Meatmallet says:

All this really means is a longer vavation for him. Feed him to Guida.

  5. tom says:

sherk would win. feed him Roger Huerta.

  6. KOPower says:

Be real, he would wrestle his way to a victory with both Huerta and Guida. No disrespect, but the roider is a freak with or without. I'm glad he will face probably Penn who is talented enough to do away with his ass. Sick of Sherk and his decision wins. Somebody needs to break his juiced arms. Then I'll be satisfied.

  7. steve says:

So true KOPOWER like I said Huerta is easily beatable. Frankie Edgar could dominate Huerta. But Sherk would completly beat him every single round. Probally stop him via TKO. B.J. Penn will beat stevenson and fight sherk where he will tko sherk or submit him. The only way B.J. can lose to sherk is if the fight goes to the 4th or 5th round in an extremly high paced fight.

  8. JOE says:

Just like everyone thought. I guess it doesn't matter much. He isn't going to beat Penn anyway. I'll bet it doesn't go passed the second round. This is of course based on the assumption that Penn defeats Stevenson. Which in my opinion is a pretty safe assumption.

“I have nothing but respect for Sean Sherk and I believe he’s been honest throughout this whole process,” said UFC President Dana White.

Dana White is a tool. Sherk was nothing but dishonest.

dont count stevenson out anyone who does is a fool i think he's a little machine he never gasses and i wouldnt mind seeing him submitting sherk with the guiatine or however u spell that… hes the master of that move and i think he could pull it off… he's been nothing but impressive anyone who counts him out is a fool i think penn will win and is the favorite for sure but he could follow in forests footsteps mark my words

  10. JOE says:

I wouldn't mind watching Stevenson submit Sherk either. He won’t do it because Sherk will be fighting Penn. Call me a fool all you like (As you already have twice in that nice long run on sentence of yours.) I'm not saying it's impossible. Stevenson may land a "lucky Serra" or pull off an impressive win Forrest Griffin style. However, it's not likely. Penn is better everywhere. Stevenson may have an edge in cardio (If Penn doesn't bring his) but that's it. You can say someone may get lucky all you like. Anything can happen, that's the name of the game. But what's likely to happen and pure luck are two separate things.

  11. JOE says:

Oh, I almost forgot. For future reference. The correct spelling is Guillotine. :D

  12. Shaun says:

Sherk has been lucky over this whole process, the UFC has made little to no reference to it. If this was any other sport his face would be plastered all over ESPN.

  13. Morey says:

Stevenson is one of those natural wrestlers with freak strength so he will be a good opponent for Penn. I can't wait to see that fight.

  14. dane drebin says:

i dont think it would be luck at all stevenson has tons of fights under his belt and is unbeaten as a lightweight im not saying hes gunna beat bj or sherk im just wondering why nobody talks about him? he looked amazing in his last fight against pelegrino and gets better with every fight
