Jones and Machida put on a great fight. It deserved fight of the night, plain and simple.
I've watched this fight a few times and what I noticed is that Machida was supremely confident and effective until Jones made him bleed. Then he wanted a way out of the fight. The karate era began and ended in a matter of months with Machida.
