Alistair Overeem announced this return to Strikeforce with a fight against Brett “The Grim” Rogers on the May 15th Showtime fightcard. Title fight — non-title fight? Overeem does not expect the fight to be for his Strikeforce heavyweight title since Rogers is coming off a loss to Fedor.
“[Rogers] He’s an excellent opponent … I’m looking forward to [smacking] his face and his loud mouth. I’m really happy that Strikeforce came with this fight so now we can settle things once and for all. [MMAJunkie]”
Also, submission master Shinya Aoki has signed with Strikeforce, his first fight could be for the lightweight title against Gilbert Melendez on the April 17 CBS fightcard.
Rounding out the April fightcard will be Gegard Mousasi taking on Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal for the Strikeforce light heavyweight title. Three title fights:
Jake Shields vs Dan Henderson
Gilbert Melendez vs Shinya Aoki
Gegard Mousasi vs King Mo

Awesomeness. It's weird, though, that Overeem will fight someone who just lost, and it won't be for the belt. I'm not a fan of that. I believe every time the champ fights in their weight class it should be for the title, and they should be fighting the top contender. It will be a great fight, but I don't get why this fight is happening now. Lesnar wouldn't fight, say, Big Nog, just to fight because he hasn't been in the octagon for a year. It's just silly to me.
i like these matchups. overeem better cycle off of the roids now if he wants to pass the commission's tests.
